Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi

How to choose your base in Abu Dhabi, from a palace on the Corniche and a downtown tower to a beach resort on Saadiyat and value and design hotels beside the Yas Island theme parks.

Abu Dhabi is a city of islands, and where you sleep shapes your trip more than in most places. The three areas that matter for visitors are the Corniche and downtown on the main island, Saadiyat Island for beaches and museums, and Yas Island for the theme parks and the Formula One circuit. Distances between them are manageable by taxi, around fifteen to forty minutes, but choosing the right base saves time and makes the holiday feel easier.

The West Corniche: for a once-in-a-lifetime stay

The western tip of the main island is home to Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, the city’s landmark hotel, with 394 rooms and suites, a private beach, two outdoor pools and a famous spa, and Qasr Al Watan right next door. It is the splurge, and it is central enough for the Grand Mosque and Saadiyat. Book it for a honeymoon, a special birthday or simply the experience of staying in a palace.

Downtown and the Corniche: for city life

If you want to walk a seafront promenade, eat out in the city and keep taxi rides short, stay downtown. Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche is our pick, a polished five-star tower across the road from the Corniche beaches, with sea views, a spa and good dining at a price that is often below the beach resorts. Qasr Al Hosn and the older city centre are close by.

Saadiyat Island: for beach and culture

Saadiyat combines one of the best beaches in the Gulf with the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena and the Zayed National Museum, all within a few minutes’ drive. Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas sits right on the sand, with big pools, rooms, suites and private villas, and suits couples and families who want a resort holiday with world-class museums nearby. The island is spread out, so plan on taxis for dinner off-site.

Yas Island: for theme parks and events

If your trip revolves around Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld and Yas Waterworld, stay on Yas. W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island is the statement choice, built over the Yas Marina Circuit with rooftop pools and nightlife, perfect for couples and motorsport fans. For families watching the budget, Pulse, Yas World Resort, the former Centro Yas Island, is a practical value base minutes from the parks, with a pool and a restaurant, and the free Yas Express buses do the rest. Yas is also the closest area to the airport.

Matching base to trip

For a first visit with culture at the centre, Emirates Palace or the Sofitel. For a beach-and-museums holiday, Saadiyat Rotana. For a theme-park week with children, Pulse on Yas Island. For style, nightlife and the Grand Prix, the W.

Practical tips

Book early for the cool season and especially for the Formula One weekend, when Yas Island books out and prices climb across the city. Check whether breakfast and parking are included, and compare package rates that bundle theme park tickets. In summer, rates drop sharply and the indoor attractions keep everyone cool.
