ClinkNOORD is the best budget base in Amsterdam for travellers who want to save money without sacrificing location or atmosphere, and its private rooms make it a surprisingly good option for budget families too. It occupies a 1920s Art Deco former laboratory on the Badhuiskade in Amsterdam Noord, right beside the ferry landing across the IJ from Centraal station. The free ferry runs around the clock and takes about five minutes, so you are effectively as close to the station as many hotels in the centre, while paying hostel prices and waking up to views over the water. The neighbourhood around the landing is one of the most dynamic in the city: the A'DAM Tower, with its lookout deck and rooftop swing, stands next door, and the Eye Filmmuseum, with its gleaming white building, cinema and exhibitions, is a short walk along the waterfront. Accommodation ranges widely. Mixed dorms sleep from four to fourteen, with en-suite options for smaller dorms; female-only dorms, all en-suite, sleep four to ten; and private rooms with their own bathrooms come as singles, doubles, twins, four-bed family rooms and larger private dorms for groups. The social side is a big part of the appeal. The on-site bar opens from late afternoon to midnight, the café runs twenty-four hours a day, a seasonal canteen serves food, and the lounges with pool tables and bookshelves make it easy to meet other travellers. Reception is open around the clock, which is handy for late flights and early trains.
Who it suits: backpackers, solo travellers, students and groups of friends, and families on a tight budget who book a private four-bed room with its own bathroom. It also suits anyone who wants to explore Noord, with the NDSM wharf, street art and creative venues a free ferry ride away, as well as the classic sights across the water.
Living in it: like any large hostel, it is lively, and the bar can be busy in the evenings, so light sleepers should consider a private room and pack earplugs. Lockers are available in the dorms; bring a padlock. The ferry runs frequently through the day and night, so getting back late is easy, although the crossing can be crowded with bikes at rush hour. Shops and supermarkets are within walking distance in Noord, and the canteen and café cover basic meals. The building's former laboratory spaces give it high ceilings and big windows, which make the communal areas feel airy rather than cramped.
Value: dorm beds are among the cheapest accommodation in central Amsterdam, and private rooms offer good value against budget hotels, especially for families or friends sharing. Prices rise sharply in summer and around big events and festivals, so book early. Amsterdam's tourist tax applies to hostels too, charged as a percentage of the rate: 12.5 percent in 2026, with a rise to 16 percent from 2027 proposed and awaiting the council's budget vote in November 2026. For a cheap, safe, social base five minutes from Centraal, it is hard to beat.
