Motel One Waterlooplein is our pick for travellers who want a central, stylish and reliable room at a budget price, and it is one of the best-value hotels within walking distance of the old centre. Motel One, the German budget-design brand, has a simple formula: compact rooms with high-quality beds and bathrooms, no unnecessary extras, a stylish lounge and fair prices. This branch, on the Valkenburgerstraat at the edge of the old Jewish quarter, takes its design cue from the Waterlooplein flea market around the corner. Its One Lounge was created with the Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek, famous for furniture made from scrap wood, and its walls are covered with old windows, doors and cabinets, with chandeliers assembled from flea-market lamps and a long workbench lit by specially made table lamps; the motto is perfectly imperfect, and the play of light and shadow nods to Rembrandt, whose house is a few minutes away. Rooms come in four types: The One, at around sixteen square metres; the slightly larger Special One; Family One rooms of about twenty square metres; and accessible rooms. The breakfast buffet, available for an extra charge, features organic products and Fairtrade coffee, and the bar in the lounge stays open into the evening. Reception is staffed around the clock. The location is excellent for sightseeing on foot: the Rembrandt House, the Waterlooplein market, the Dutch National Opera and Ballet and the Zuiderkerk are all nearby, the Nieuwmarkt is a short walk, and trams and the metro stop at the Waterlooplein.
Who it suits: budget travellers, couples and solo visitors who mainly need a comfortable, clean, well-located base, and small families who can manage in a compact Family One room. It is also a good choice for travellers who prefer the reliability of a brand with consistent standards over the gamble of a small independent budget hotel in an old building.
Living in it: rooms are small by any standard, so travel light; there is clever storage but little space to spread out. There is no full restaurant, but the lounge, bar and breakfast buffet cover the basics, and the Nieuwmarkt, the Jodenbreestraat and the streets around the Waterlooplein are full of places to eat. The neighbourhood is central yet relatively calm compared with the Damrak and the Red Light District, and the Hortus Botanicus, ARTIS and the Jewish Cultural Quarter are a short walk east. Parking is available in a public garage nearby for those arriving by car.
Value: rates are among the most competitive for a central Amsterdam hotel, though they still rise considerably in summer and around big events. Breakfast costs extra, which keeps the base rate low. The tourist tax is added as a percentage of the room rate: 12.5 percent in 2026, with a rise to 16 percent from 2027 proposed in the city budget and due for a council vote in November 2026. For a design-conscious, central budget stay, it is very hard to beat.
