The Moxy is a smart pick for budget-conscious travellers who still want a modern, design-led hotel with a view, and it is one of the best-value branded hotels in Amsterdam. It opened in 2018 on the Danzigerkade in Houthavens, a former timber harbour on the IJ, west of Centraal station, which is being transformed into a new waterside neighbourhood. Moxy is Marriott's playful, budget-minded brand, and the formula is clear: you check in at the bar, the public spaces double as lounge, workspace and party venue, and the rooms are compact but cleverly designed. Each room has floor-to-ceiling windows, plush beds with good linens, a walk-in shower, a lounge chair, a large streaming-ready television, built-in USB ports and fast free Wi-Fi. Lookout rooms take advantage of the location with harbour-side views over the water, and on a clear evening the sunsets over the IJ are spectacular. Rather than a formal restaurant, the bar and lounge serve drinks and casual food into the evening and set a sociable tone. The neighbourhood is quieter than the centre and gives you a sense of contemporary Amsterdam life. The Westerpark and the Westergas cultural park are a short walk south, with their restaurants, cinema and markets, and the Spaarndammerbuurt, with the Amsterdam School architecture of Het Schip, is close by. Buses and a short bike ride connect to Centraal station and the Jordaan.
Who it suits: young travellers, couples on a budget and solo visitors who want a modern room, a lively bar and a view, and who do not mind a short commute to the main sights. It is also good for repeat visitors who want to explore the western side of the city and the Westergas scene. Families travelling with young children may prefer a hotel with dedicated family rooms and a more central location, and travellers needing accessible rooms should check carefully, as the hotel's room listings show none designated as accessible.
Living in it: rooms are compact, so pack light and use the storage well. Ask for a Lookout room if you want the water view, as the difference in atmosphere is considerable. Renting a bike is the best way to get around from here: the Jordaan is about ten to fifteen minutes away by bike and Centraal a little further. The area is still developing, and while there are good cafés and restaurants nearby, the choice is smaller than in the centre; Westergas and the Haarlemmerdijk fill the gap within walking distance.
Value: rates are among the lower ones for a branded hotel in Amsterdam, especially outside summer and big events. Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and redeem points. The tourist tax is added as a percentage of the room rate: 12.5 percent in 2026, with a 16 percent rate for 2027 proposed and awaiting the council's budget vote in November 2026. For a stylish, sociable base at an approachable price, it is hard to beat.
