The Hoxton brought a new kind of Amsterdam canal hotel when it opened on the Herengracht in the mid-2010s: historic, central and stylish, but relaxed and priced well below the grand hotels on the same canal. It occupies a row of five canal houses on one of the city's most beautiful stretches of water, including a mansion once owned by a seventeenth-century mayor, joined together behind their original gabled facades. The British-born Hoxton brand is known for open, sociable lobbies and its ground floor is just that: a lively, living-room-style space of sofas, plants and long tables where locals come to work, meet and drink coffee during the day, flowing into Lotti's, the brasserie-style restaurant and bar that stays busy into the evening. Rooms come in a range of sizes, from compact rooms (genuinely snug, as is usual in canal houses) to roomier options and larger rooms with canal views, and they share a warm, characterful style with patterned fabrics, vintage-inspired furniture and nods to the building's history. The brand's practical touches — fast free Wi-Fi, a fridge with complimentary water and milk, and flexible check-in and check-out options — make it easy to live in. The location is excellent for a first visit: the Nine Streets are just to the west, the Jordaan and the Anne Frank House are a short walk, Dam Square and the Royal Palace are five minutes away, and tram stops on the Raadhuisstraat connect you to the Museum Quarter. In October 2026 the hotel unveiled a refresh by AIME Studios: a reimagined Lotti's bar with canal-facing perch seating, new lobby booths, a transformed courtyard pantry, daytime pastries and coffee from the Amsterdam bakery Uncommon, and five new Signature Rooms. It is one of the best-value ways to wake up on the Canal Ring.
Who it suits: couples, solo travellers and friends on a city break who want a central canal address with a sociable atmosphere at a fair price. It is particularly good for younger travellers and anyone who enjoys a lively lobby scene, and for business travellers who like a hotel that doubles as a workspace. It suits families less well, as the smaller rooms are tight, though larger room categories can work with one child.
Living in it: the room categories are named by size, so read the descriptions carefully: the smallest rooms are compact and best for one person or a couple travelling light, while larger rooms and canal-view rooms are worth the upgrade for longer stays. The canal-house layout means stairs and varied room shapes, though there are lifts. The lobby can be busy and loud in the evening, which is part of its charm, but rooms on the upper floors are quieter. The restaurant is a good, reasonably priced option for breakfast and dinner without leaving the hotel.
Value: rates sit in the middle to upper-middle of the Amsterdam market, which in this expensive city counts as good value for a Herengracht address. Booking early helps, especially for weekends, summer and holiday periods, and the tourist tax is added as a percentage of the room rate. The value case is simple: a central canal location, a stylish building and a sociable atmosphere, for considerably less than the luxury hotels on the same street.
