The Middelheim Museum is one of the great sculpture parks of Europe and, remarkably, it is free. Since the middle of the twentieth century the city has gathered modern and contemporary sculpture in the grounds of a former country estate on the south side of Antwerp, and today a large collection of works stands among lawns, woods and ponds, from classic bronzes by artists such as Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore to large contemporary installations commissioned for the site. Several pavilions add indoor spaces: the Visitor Pavilion where your visit starts, the Braem Pavilion and the Collection Pavilion with the library, plus a small castle. Temporary exhibitions and new commissions keep the park changing. It is a calm, green contrast to the old town, ideal for a walk with art, and children enjoy the sense of discovery as the next sculpture appears through the trees.
How it works: entry is free and needs no ticket. The park is open every day except Monday (Easter and Whit Monday excepted), and from October to March it opens from 10:00 to 17:00. It closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, closes early on 24 and 31 December and can close in stormy weather. Visitors are asked to leave the park half an hour before closing.
What to expect: the Visitor Pavilion has park maps, free lockers and a shop, and there are water points in the pavilions. The MIKA café is temporarily closed for restoration, so bring a snack or plan lunch around the nearby Nachtegalen Park and Park Den Brandt. Paths are mostly level, and wheelchairs and a golf cart can be borrowed by reservation.
Getting there and making the most of it: the museum is at Middelheimlaan 61 in the south of the city, reached by bus, by bike on safe cycle paths or by car, with free parking at the Beukenlaan lot about 300 metres from the main entrance. Velo bike-share stations are close by. Go on a dry day, wear comfortable shoes and allow two hours to wander.
