For the ancient Greeks, Delphi was the centre of the world, the spot where two eagles released by Zeus from opposite ends of the earth met, marked by a carved stone called the omphalos, or navel. For a thousand years pilgrims, kings and city-states climbed here to consult the Pythia, Apollo's priestess, whose cryptic answers shaped wars, colonies and lives. Today Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, for many travellers, the most beautiful ancient site in Greece: terraces of ruins climb the flank of Mount Parnassus beneath the cliffs of the Phaedriades, looking down a gorge carpeted with olive trees toward the Gulf of Corinth. From the entrance, the Sacred Way zigzags upward past the remains of the treasuries that Greek cities built to show off their offerings, including the reconstructed Athenian Treasury, to the great Temple of Apollo where the oracle spoke. Above it is a remarkably well-preserved theatre, and higher still, at the top of the site, a stadium where the Pythian Games were held. Below the main sanctuary, the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia holds the Tholos, a circular temple whose three restored columns are one of the most photographed sights in Greece. The Delphi Archaeological Museum is a highlight in its own right, home to the bronze Charioteer of Delphi, one of the finest surviving Greek bronzes, the Sphinx of the Naxians and a marble omphalos. Delphi lies about 180 kilometres north-west of Athens, around two and a half to three hours by road, so a guided full-day tour is the easy way to go. Through Tiqets you can choose a full-day guided coach tour with entry, a small-group tour, or a VR audio-guided option.

What a typical tour looks like: departures leave central Athens early in the morning, often from a meeting point near the Acropolis, and drive through the Boeotian plain and up into the mountains. The guided visit covers the sanctuary of Apollo and the museum, usually with time to see the Athena Pronaia sanctuary from above or on foot, and then there is free time for lunch in the modern village of Delphi or a stop in the mountain village of Arachova, known for its ski-season crowds, woven rugs and local cheese. You are back in Athens in the early evening after about ten hours. The standard full-day guided tour includes an air-conditioned coach, a licensed guide with headsets and the entrance ticket, but not lunch; small-group tours cost more but feel much more personal. Some cheaper products are transport-only with a VR or audio guide, so read the inclusions carefully.

On the site: Delphi is steep. The path from the entrance to the stadium climbs a long way up stone steps and uneven paths, with little shade, so wear proper shoes, carry water and allow time to rest. In summer the heat can be intense, and in winter the mountain air is cold and the site can close early or in bad weather; snow on Parnassus is common from December. The views improve the higher you climb, and the stadium at the top is often almost empty. If you only have the energy for one section, prioritise the Temple of Apollo, the theatre and the museum.

Going independently: KTEL coaches run from Athens to Delphi, and staying the night in Delphi or Arachova lets you see the site in the early morning before the tour coaches arrive, which is magical. With a car, Delphi combines well with the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas, or with a longer loop to Meteora. But for most visitors on a short Athens stay, a well-run guided day trip is the most efficient way to experience one of the essential places of the ancient world.

About 180 kilometres north-west, roughly two and a half to three hours each way by road. A full-day tour usually lasts around ten hours.

Does the Delphi tour include the entrance ticket?

The standard full-day guided tour on Tiqets includes the entrance ticket, a licensed guide and coach transport, but not lunch. Some cheaper VR or transport-only products do not include entry, so check the inclusions.
