SkyCity and Federal Street (CBD)

The Grand by SkyCity

A polished 312-room hotel on Federal Street with direct access to the SkyCity precinct, steps from the Sky Tower, the All Blacks Experience and Wētā Workshop Unleashed, with harbour-view rooms, a heated lap pool and the East Day Spa.

★★★★★

The Grand by SkyCity is the most convenient upmarket base for the city’s indoor attractions. It stands at 90 Federal Street and connects directly to the SkyCity entertainment complex, so the Sky Tower, the All Blacks Experience, Wētā Workshop Unleashed and a long line of restaurants are all within a few minutes’ walk under cover. There are 312 rooms and suites, including 20 suites, ranging from Grand King rooms to Deluxe and Harbour View rooms, Deluxe Suites and a Presidential Suite, and the higher harbour-view categories look out over the Waitematā. The leisure facilities are good for a city hotel: a heated lap pool, a sauna, a spa pool and the East Day Spa with eleven treatment rooms. Breakfast is a buffet at The Terrace on Level 7, and SkyCity’s signature restaurants are close at hand. Note that the wider precinct includes a casino, which has its own age and ID rules.

Location and getting around: Federal Street sits in the middle of the CBD, about ten minutes downhill on foot to the Viaduct Harbour and around fifteen minutes to Britomart and the Downtown Ferry Terminal. Buses to Ponsonby, Parnell and Mount Eden leave from nearby streets, and the SkyBus airport service stops in the city centre.

Rooms: Grand King and Deluxe King rooms are spacious and modern, while Harbour View rooms add the outlook that makes Auckland special. Families and longer stays will appreciate the extra room in the suites.

Who it suits: first-time visitors who want everything close, families planning a rainy-day mix of the Sky Tower, the All Blacks Experience and Wētā, and couples who like to walk to dinner. It is less suited to travellers who want a quiet boutique feel.

Good to know: check-in is from 3pm and check-out at 11am. Parking is in the SkyCity car park for a fee, and the hotel runs offers that bundle self-parking with a food and beverage credit. Booking direct with the SkyCity Unlocked programme gives a discount on room rates.
