The Hill Country is the other half of an Austin trip: limestone hills, live oaks, peach orchards, wineries and small towns founded by German settlers, an hour or so west along US Highway 290. The easiest way to see the highlights without renting a car is this full-day guided tour, which picks up at select downtown Austin hotels in the morning and returns around late afternoon. The route heads out on the backroads to Johnson City and the visitor center of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, then on through Stonewall, the Texas peach capital, to the LBJ Ranch — the "Texas White House," where Johnson spent a remarkable share of his presidency, entertained world leaders and is buried in the family cemetery by the Pedernales River. Interior tours of the ranch house itself are suspended until further notice, but the grounds, the exhibits and artifacts in the hangar, a short film and the small JetStar plane nicknamed "Air Force One-Half" are all part of the visit, and admission to the adjacent Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site is included. Next comes Fredericksburg, with one to two hours of free time on its long, handsome Main Street of stone buildings, shops, biergartens and tasting rooms; history fans can use the time at the National Museum of the Pacific War, honoring native son Admiral Chester Nimitz. The tour then swings through Luckenbach, the tiny town made famous by a country song, before the scenic drive back to Austin. Lunch, museum admissions in Fredericksburg and wine tastings are extra.

Why a tour rather than a rental car? Distances are the main reason — the loop is well over a hundred miles — but the bigger one is wine. Highway 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg is lined with wineries and tasting rooms, and the guided format means nobody has to stay sober to drive home. You also get narration that ties the landscape to the people: the German immigrants who founded Fredericksburg in the 1840s and kept their language for generations, the ranching economy, and the Johnson family's deep roots along the Pedernales. The trade-off is time; one to two hours in Fredericksburg is enough for a stroll and a lunch but not for a museum and a winery and shopping, so pick your priority before you arrive.

The LBJ Ranch section is the heart of it for history fans. The National Park Service site preserves the ranch landscape much as Johnson knew it, with the reconstructed birthplace, the one-room schoolhouse he attended and the family cemetery where he and Lady Bird are buried under the live oaks. The ranch house interior is closed to tours until further notice, so expect to see it from outside, but the hangar exhibits, the jet and the film give good context. The neighboring state historic site includes a living-history farm where costumed interpreters work as German farm families did around 1918 — worth a few minutes if time allows.

Practical notes: the tour runs about eight hours, roughly nine to five, though traffic and weather can stretch it; there is a minimum group size and the operator may cancel and refund if it is not met. Free cancellation is available up to twenty-four hours before. Eat breakfast first, bring water and dress for the weather — summer heat in the Hill Country is serious. Spring is the most beautiful season, when bluebonnets and other wildflowers line the roadsides; autumn brings harvest season at the wineries and cooler days. If you want to swim at Hamilton Pool or linger in Fredericksburg overnight, rent a car instead and treat this as a template.
