The LINE Austin has the best location of any downtown hotel for first-time visitors who want to be on the water. It stands at 111 East Cesar Chavez Street, where Congress Avenue meets Lady Bird Lake, so the Congress Avenue Bridge and its bat colony are steps away, the Butler Trail runs along the shore below, and the Capitol is a straight walk up the avenue. The hotel opened in 2018 in a thoroughly reimagined older tower, and the redesign leaned into the view: rooms and suites have massive windows framing the lake, the skyline or both, with a warm, pared-back look of wood, plants and neutral fabrics. There are 428 rooms, including more than a hundred suites, which makes it one of the larger hotels downtown, but it rarely feels anonymous thanks to its dining and bars. Arlo Grey, the lakeside restaurant led by chef Kristen Kish, serves refined, personal cooking in a room that looks straight onto the water. P6, the open-air rooftop lounge, is one of the best places in the city for a sunset drink above the lake, Cantero is a cocktail bar built around sotol, a coastal-Mexico taqueria offers casual tacos, and a coffee shop handles mornings. The infinity pool overlooks the lake, with weekend access limited to hotel guests. The LINE brand, now part of Soho House and Co., brings a creative, social energy to the lobby. Trade-offs: the size means busy public spaces on weekends and during conventions, and Cesar Chavez is a busy road. Fit: first-time visitors, couples who want views, food lovers and anyone planning to watch the bats.

The hotel's site has long been a downtown landmark on the lakefront, and the transformation into The LINE was part of a wave of reinvention along Lady Bird Lake that has turned the shore into one of the city's liveliest strips. Its position at the junction of Congress Avenue and the lake gives it unusually easy access to both downtown and South Congress: walk north for the Capitol, the museums and Sixth Street, or cross the bridge south for SoCo's shops and music.

Room craft: ask for a lake-view room on a high floor for the signature view of the water and the bridge, or a city-view room if you prefer the skyline. Suites add space and sometimes corner views. Book Arlo Grey ahead for dinner, especially on weekends, and plan a sunset on P6 — in bat season, you can follow it with a short walk to the bridge to watch the colony emerge. The pool is calmer on weekdays; on weekends, access is for hotel guests only. Runners and walkers will appreciate stepping straight onto the trail in the morning.

Practicals: 111 East Cesar Chavez Street, at the foot of Congress Avenue on Lady Bird Lake; valet parking at downtown rates; walkable to the Capitol, Sixth Street, Rainey Street and, across the bridge, South Congress. Fit: first trips, couples, food lovers and outdoor-minded travelers who want the lake at the doorstep.
