The Lake Louise Ski Resort spreads across several faces on the east side of the Bow Valley, directly across from Lake Louise itself, and the view from the upper lifts — the lake, the Chateau and Victoria Glacier lined up on the far side — is one of the great sights in skiing. It is a big, varied mountain: long groomed cruisers on the front side, open bowls and chutes on the back, and tree skiing in the Larch area, with lodges at the base and on the mountain. The biggest recent change is Richardson's Ridge, which added about 200 acres of new terrain and a high-speed quad in early 2026; for 2026-27 the resort has added a new green run, Grove Glade, expanded glading, new snowmaking on the ridge and upgrades to the Top of the World chair to increase its speed and loading capacity. Lifts run 9:30am to 4:30pm this winter, and the resort's season pass covers November 6, 2026 to May 2, 2027 — Lake Louise is usually one of the first resorts in Canada to open and one of the last to close. The base area is at 1 Whitehorn Road, which also serves as the Parks Canada Park and Ride in summer. Lake Louise has its own free ski shuttle from Banff, roughly forty-five minutes away, and the village of Lake Louise is a few minutes' drive from the base. Because the resort sits inside the national park, development is limited and the atmosphere is low-key rather than glitzy: this is a skier's mountain with an extraordinary view, not a resort town.

Reading the mountain. The front side faces west toward the lake and catches the afternoon sun; it is where most visitors spend their first day, with long groomers from the Top of the World chair. The back bowls hold the steeper, wider terrain and often the best snow after a storm, while the Larch area offers sheltered trees on cold or windy days. Richardson's Ridge is the newest piece, built with intermediate and family skiing in mind, and the new Grove Glade and Pikaboo connections make it easier to move between it and the rest of the resort. Lake Louise receives more snow than the rest of Banff National Park, and the long season means you can ski here from early November to May.

How to plan. If you are staying in Banff, use the resort's free shuttle or drive the Trans-Canada about forty-five minutes west; in winter, winter tires are a must. Staying at Lake Louise itself puts you minutes from the lifts and lets you combine skiing with skating on the lake at the end of the day. Buy tickets online in advance for the best price and check the snow report for wind and temperature — the upper mountain can be bitterly cold in January. The resort also operates the Lake Louise Sightseeing Gondola in summer, when the same base becomes a grizzly-viewing and hiking hub.

Who it suits. Lake Louise works for every level: beginners have dedicated terrain near the base, intermediates have days of cruising, and experts head for the back bowls and chutes. It pairs naturally with Sunshine Village and Mt. Norquay on a multi-resort trip, and many visitors ski Sunshine for the snow and Lake Louise for the scenery. Après is relaxed, centred on the base lodges and the hotels in the village. If you only ski one day in the park and want the most photogenic mountain, choose this one.
