Belgian Beer World Experience

Belgium's beer culture inside the old stock exchange

Belgium takes beer so seriously that UNESCO lists its beer culture as intangible heritage, and this is the place to understand why. Belgian Beer World opened in 2023 inside the Bourse, the grand nineteenth-century stock exchange on the central boulevard, as part of the building's restoration. The experience walks you through ingredients, brewing methods, the abbey and Trappist traditions, lambic and gueuze from the Brussels area, and the rituals of the right glass for each beer, using interactive displays rather than glass cases. Tickets include beer at the end, served high in the building with a view over the boulevard. It is a good rainy-afternoon choice and a smart first stop, because the menus of the city's beer cafés make far more sense afterward.

The building is half the attraction. The Bourse was built in the 1870s in a florid neoclassical style, and its renovation opened the ground floor to the public and created this experience on the upper levels.

Working the visit: allow about ninety minutes, more if you read every panel. There are options with extra tastings; choose a guided tasting if you want to compare styles side by side. Visitors must be of legal drinking age to be served, though children can join the tour, and soft drinks are available.

Afterward: the old beer cafés of the centre are a few minutes away, and this is the moment to order a gueuze or a Trappist you would not otherwise have tried. Eat something first; Belgian beers are often strong.
