Bran and Peleș Castles Day Trip

Royal palace, Dracula legend and Brașov in one day

Two of Romania’s most famous castles lie north of Bucharest in the Carpathians, and this full-day small-group tour links them. Peleș Castle, in the mountain resort of Sinaia, was built for King Carol I in the late nineteenth century and is a neo-Renaissance fantasy of turrets, carved wood, stained glass and armour halls, among the most richly decorated palaces in Europe. Bran Castle, perched on a rock over a mountain pass, is sold to the world as Dracula’s Castle, though its real history is as a medieval toll fortress and a home of Queen Marie. The tour adds a short walk in the old town of Brașov. Entry to both castles, a small minibus with an English-speaking guide and audio guides in several languages are included.

How it works: the tour leaves from the Grand Hotel Bucharest on Bulevardul Nicolae Bălcescu early in the morning and returns in the evening, about twelve hours in all. Groups are capped at sixteen. There is no hotel pickup, so you meet at the departure point fifteen minutes early, and food and drinks are extra.

Check the day: Peleș Castle is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. On those days the group sees it from the outside and spends longer in Brașov instead, so book a Wednesday to Sunday if the palace interior matters to you. Bran Castle opens later on Mondays. The ticket is nonrefundable and cannot be rescheduled.

What to expect: it is a long day with several hours on the road, and the mountain highway can be slow at weekends and in ski season. Bran is busy and its rooms are small and plain compared with Peleș, which is the visual highlight. Bring layers: the mountains are noticeably colder than Bucharest.
