Hotel Rum is the hotel for food lovers and design fans who want a small, characterful base in the heart of Pest without paying luxury prices. It stands on Királyi Pál utca, a quiet street in the cultural downtown of District V, the Inner City, close to the university quarter and a short walk from the Great Market Hall, the Hungarian National Museum and the Danube. It has just 40 rooms, designed by Budapest-based designers and architects who mixed traditional and contemporary styles with wit: the room types are named after kinds of rum, from Single Rum and Light Rum to Spiced Rum, Gold Rum and Black Rum, in sizes from small to large, with bold colours, clever storage and comfortable beds. The hotel's real distinction is its food. On the ground floor, SALT is one of the most celebrated restaurants in Hungary, holding one Michelin star and a green Michelin star for its sustainable approach. It serves a tasting menu of modern Hungarian cooking based on meat from a family farm and herbs and wild plants foraged by the chef, and it is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday; reservations are essential and usually needed weeks in advance. On the seventh floor, SOLID is a sky bar and rooftop restaurant with large windows and a view of the Budapest skyline, whose roof opens in warm weather, and which has also been noted by the Michelin Guide. Breakfast is served in the morning and an à la carte brunch later in the day. Service is friendly and informal, with a 24-hour front desk and a concierge, and the hotel is a sister property of Hotel Gin Budapest. Rates are moderate, making it one of the best-value design hotels in the city.

Location: the hotel is on a quiet side street, which means peaceful nights, but you are only a few minutes' walk from Kálvin tér, where the M3 and M4 metro lines meet and the airport bus stops, and from Ferenciek tere and the southern end of Váci utca. The Great Market Hall and the Liberty Bridge are about ten minutes away, with Gellért Hill and the Citadella beyond, and the Inner City's cafés, bookshops and bars are all around. The Jewish Quarter is about fifteen minutes' walk north.

Choosing the room: the smaller categories are compact, fine for a short stay or a solo traveller; for a longer stay or a couple who want space, book one of the larger categories. Ask for a higher floor if you want more light. Book SALT when you book the room if you want to dine there, as tables are scarce, and plan at least one evening at SOLID for the sunset view.

The trade-offs: with only 40 rooms, the hotel has no spa or pool, and public spaces are limited to the restaurants and bar. Rooms in the smaller categories are small. But the combination of design, a central and quiet location, a Michelin-starred kitchen downstairs and a sky bar upstairs, at a moderate price, is hard to beat for couples and food-focused travellers.
