Most visitors stay in Pest, but Buda has its own rewards: quieter streets, the Castle District overhead and green hills a tram ride away. The Mercure Budapest Castle Hill is a well-priced way to stay on this side of the river. It is a four-star hotel of Accor's Mercure brand on Krisztina körút, the boulevard that curves around the western foot of Castle Hill, within a hundred metres of Déli station, the terminus of the M2 metro and the departure point for trains to Lake Balaton. The rooms are compact but well designed, in Superior and Privilege categories of about twenty to twenty-three square metres, facing either the city or the historic side towards Castle Hill. The most useful for families are the Superior rooms with a double or two single beds plus a sofa bed, which sleep three, and the Superior Suite, with a separate living room and bedroom for up to four guests. The Privilege rooms add extra comforts for couples. The hotel's Station Restaurant, with grill, lighter and Hungarian menus, and the Station Bar take their theme from the railway station next door, and breakfast is served in the Budavár Restaurant. There is parking on site, both outdoor and in a garage, which is valuable in Buda, and the hotel is well set up for groups and coaches. The setting is functional rather than charming: Krisztina körút is a busy road, and the area around Déli station is a transport hub rather than a postcard view. But the hotel is a short walk from the quieter streets below the castle, and from the hilltop it is easy to reach Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion and the Royal Palace on foot or by bus. Prices are generally lower than at the Hilton on the hilltop or at the Danube-front hotels, which makes it a sensible choice for families and travellers who value space and price over views.
Location logic: Déli station gives you the M2 metro straight under Castle Hill and the river to Batthyány tér, Deák Ferenc tér and Blaha Lujza tér, and trams and buses fan out from the station. Széll Kálmán tér, the main transport hub of Buda, is a short walk north, with buses up to the Castle District and trams towards the Buda Hills, the cogwheel railway and the Children's Railway. The walk up to the castle takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, uphill through quiet residential streets and stairways.
Choosing the room: ask for a room on the historic side, facing Castle Hill, rather than the city side, for the more attractive outlook. Families should book the sofa-bed Superior rooms or the Superior Suite. If you are driving, reserve parking with your room.
How it compares: the Hilton Budapest, next to Matthias Church, gives you the castle itself and the river views, at a much higher price. The Novotel Danube offers Parliament views from the Buda embankment. The Mercure is the budget-conscious Buda option, ideal for families and for anyone planning day trips by train or car.
