Budapest is one of Europe's great cities for budget travellers, and Wombat's is the hostel to choose if you want to save money without giving up comfort, cleanliness or a central location. It belongs to the well-known Wombat's group, which runs large, professionally managed hostels in several European cities, and its Budapest house occupies a building from 1840 on Király utca that once operated as a four-star hotel, which shows in the solid rooms and wide corridors. There is a mix of private rooms and dorms, including female-only dorms, and every room, dorm or private, has its own bathroom, with a hairdryer, and air-conditioning, which matters in the Budapest summer. Bed linen is included. The social life centres on the WomBAR, the hostel's own bar, where guests meet in the evenings and where free in-house events are held, and on the WomCAFÉ, which serves food and coffee through the day. Breakfast is available for an extra charge. Reception is open around the clock, and luggage storage is available, so you can arrive early or leave late. The hostel is large, which gives it a buzzing, international atmosphere, but it is run more like a budget hotel than a party hostel: the rooms are quiet enough to sleep, and staff keep things in order. Private rooms are a good budget alternative to a hotel for couples and friends, at prices well below the three-star hotels of the centre. Note that since 1 January 2026, private apartments in District VI can no longer be rented to tourists for short stays; hostels and hotels are not affected, which makes well-located places like Wombat's more useful than ever for budget travellers who want to stay in this part of the city. Families can book private rooms, though the atmosphere is aimed at young adults.
Location logic: Király utca is one of the liveliest streets in Budapest, running from the edge of Deák Ferenc tér, where all three main metro lines meet, through the heart of the nightlife district. Gozsdu Udvar, the passageway of bars and restaurants, is a few steps away, and Szimpla Kert and the other ruin bars are a short walk. St. Stephen's Basilica, the Opera and Andrássy Avenue are all within ten minutes on foot, and the Danube and the Chain Bridge within fifteen, so you can walk to most of the major sights and take the metro to the rest.
Choosing the room: book a private double for privacy at a budget price, a female-only dorm if you prefer, or a smaller dorm for a quieter night. Book early for summer and for big events, when the hostel fills up. The best rates are usually on the hostel's own website. Bring earplugs: the street outside is lively late into the night at weekends.
How it compares: Hotel Rum, around the corner, offers boutique style for more money; Wombat's gives you a clean, safe, social base in the same neighbourhood for much less. For solo travellers and young couples on a budget, it is one of the best-value addresses in the city.
