Oranjezicht City Farm Market

From a community farm to the city's favourite weekend market

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market is where Cape Town shops, eats and catches up on weekend mornings, and it is the most enjoyable market in the city. It grew out of the Oranjezicht City Farm, a community food garden started in 2012 on an old bowling green in the leafy suburb of Oranjezicht, on the slopes of Table Mountain above the city centre. The farm grows certified organic vegetables, runs education, volunteer and workshop programmes, and set out to reconnect city people with where their food comes from. Its market quickly became bigger than the farm, drawing local farmers, bakers, cheesemakers, coffee roasters, winemakers and cooks, and for years it was held in a marquee at Granger Bay beside the sea. In December 2025 it moved across the road into a brand-new, purpose-built market space at the corner of Granger Bay Boulevard and Dock Road at the V&A Waterfront. The format is unchanged: rows of stalls selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, artisan bread, pastries, cheese, charcuterie, flowers and pantry goods, plus a lively food court with breakfast, coffee, brunch and lunch from a wide range of cooks, and long tables where everybody eats together. The market runs on Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:30 and Sundays from 08:30 to 14:30, and there is a Wednesday night market from 16:00 to 21:30, closed in June and July, with food, drinks and music. Entry is free; you pay only for what you buy. The farm itself, at 87 Upper Orange Street in Oranjezicht, can also be visited on weekday mornings and Saturday mornings, and offers tours and workshops.

Making the most of it: arrive early on Saturday, when the produce is at its best and before the brunch crowd arrives around ten. Walk the whole market before you buy, then pick a breakfast and find a seat at the communal tables. Bring a shopping bag, and some cash for smaller stalls, although most take cards. If you are self-catering, this is where to stock up on fruit, vegetables, bread and cheese for the week. The Wednesday night market is a good alternative for an informal dinner with live music.

Building a morning: the market is a short walk from the V&A Waterfront and the Mouille Point end of the Sea Point Promenade, so you can combine breakfast with a seafront walk, the Two Oceans Aquarium or Zeitz MOCAA. Parking is available at the Waterfront. For a deeper look at the project, visit the city farm in Oranjezicht on a weekday morning, where you can see the vegetable beds and learn about its community work.

Who it suits: food lovers, families looking for a relaxed weekend morning, couples who want a lazy brunch, and anyone self-catering. It is busy and sociable rather than calm; if you want quiet, come right at opening time.
