The Aviario Nacional de Colombia is the best family day out near Cartagena and a surprise for anyone who thinks of the city only as walls and beaches. It lies on the Barú peninsula, about an hour from the old town, on the road to Playa Blanca, and it celebrated ten years since opening in October 2026. Colombia has more bird species than any other country, and the aviary shows a slice of that diversity in nearly eight hectares of landscaped grounds. A trail of about 1.7 kilometres winds through 22 environments, including walk-through aviaries for coastal, desert and forest birds, with around 2,000 birds of some 200 species, many of them rescued or bred in care. You can expect scarlet macaws, toucans, flamingos, ibises and owls, and there is an Aves al Vuelo flight show twice a day. The paths are shaded and gently sloping, wheelchairs are available on request, and the whole visit takes under two hours, so it combines easily with a swim at a Barú beach afterwards.
How it works: the aviary opens every day from 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00. Tickets are sold on its own website and at the box office, with a higher rate for foreign visitors than for Colombians, and a reduced rate for children and students; foreign prices rose on 1 September 2026, and anyone showing a local ticket without a Colombian ID pays the difference at the gate.
Getting there: the aviary does not run its own transport, and there is no public transport on Barú. Take a taxi, a private driver or a hire car, or use one of the third-party shuttles that leave from the Clock Tower in the old town, agreeing the price first. The drive takes around 50 to 60 minutes.
Making the most of it: food and pets are not allowed, but you may bring a water bottle, and feeding the birds is strictly forbidden. Arrive in time for the 11:30 flight show, which is cancelled in rain, then head to a nearby beach on Barú for lunch and a swim.
