The Kölner Dom is the reason many people come to Cologne, and it does not disappoint. Building began in 1248 to house the relics of the Three Kings, stopped for centuries with a crane famously left on the unfinished tower, and was only completed in 1880, when the two spires made it the tallest building in the world for a few years. Inside, the scale is overwhelming: a soaring nave, medieval and modern stained glass, including Gerhard Richter’s window of coloured squares, the gilded Shrine of the Three Kings behind the high altar and the Gero Cross, one of the oldest large crucifixes north of the Alps. Since 1 July 2026 visitors need a ticket to tour the cathedral, while worship, personal prayer and lighting a candle remain free through dedicated entrances. Separate tickets cover the climb up the south tower and the treasury, and a combined tower and treasury ticket is the best value. This page links to the official cathedral ticket shop.
How to visit: buy tickets online at the cathedral’s own shop or at the ticket point on the square. The standard visitor ticket costs around twelve euros, with reduced prices for students and free entry for children under 14, and the tower and treasury are sold separately, each for less than the main ticket, or together as one combined ticket. Visitor hours are generally 10:00 to 17:45 on weekdays and Saturdays, with last admission at 17:30, and a shorter window on Sundays and holidays, roughly 13:30 to 16:30, because of the services. Guided tours are booked through the cathedral’s partner, the Domforum, and need a cathedral ticket as well.
What to expect: the tower climb is 533 steps up a narrow spiral staircase with no lift, and takes most people thirty to forty-five minutes up and down. Halfway you pass the great bells, and at the top a viewing platform looks over the Rhine, the Hohenzollern Bridge and the rooftops of the old town. The treasury sits in vaulted cellars beside the cathedral and shows liturgical gold, reliquaries and vestments, and CologneCard holders get a reduction there.
Making the most of it: come right at 10:00 on a weekday for the quietest nave, and save the tower for a clear day. In late November and December the Christmas market fills Roncalliplatz next to the cathedral, which makes the square busy but magical after dark. Dress modestly, keep your voice down and expect parts of the nave to close during services.
