The Admiral Hotel is the place to stay if you want the history of Copenhagen's harbour around you, at a price below the city's luxury hotels. It occupies a listed grain warehouse from the 1780s on Toldbodgade, right on the waterfront between Nyhavn and the royal palace of Amalienborg, and it has been a hotel since 1978. The building has kept its character: raw brick walls, great brick arches and roughly two-hundred-year-old beams of Pomeranian pine run through the public spaces and many of the rooms, so you sleep among the timbers of an eighteenth-century trading warehouse. The hotel has 366 rooms and suites, and it recently completed a multi-year transformation of its rooms and public areas. In the summer of 2026 it added a new feature that is rare in Copenhagen: a heated outdoor sitting pool with a relaxation area overlooking the harbour, designed to be used all year round. The signature restaurant, aye aye, sits on the waterfront and cooks over open fire, combining Mediterranean influences with Nordic ingredients, and SIR, the bar, set in the old warehouse, is a characterful place for a drink. The hotel is part of the Nordic Hotels and Resorts group and a member of the L.V.X. Collection of Preferred Hotels and Resorts. The location is superb for sightseeing on foot. Nyhavn, with its coloured houses and canal boats, is about five minutes away, Amalienborg and the changing of the guard about the same, the Marble Church and Designmuseum Danmark are a short walk inland, and the harbour promenade leads north to Kastellet and the Little Mermaid. Across the water, the Opera House stands opposite, and the harbour buses stop close by. Rates are in the upper-middle to upper range for Copenhagen, depending on the room and season, which is fair for a harbourfront hotel with this much character in the royal quarter.
Room advice: rooms vary considerably because of the historic building, with beams and brick in many of them, so read the descriptions and choose a harbour-view room or a suite for the best experience. Rooms facing the city side are quieter but lack the water view. Ask about the new pool and relaxation area when booking, and plan at least one evening at aye aye and a drink at SIR.
Location logic: staying here puts you in the royal and harbour quarter, with Nyhavn, Amalienborg and Frederiksstaden on the doorstep and the old town about fifteen minutes' walk away. Kongens Nytorv metro station is within walking distance for trips across the city, and canal tours leave from Nyhavn.
Who it suits: couples, history lovers and anyone who wants harbour views and character rather than glossy luxury. Compared with 71 Nyhavn, another converted warehouse nearby, the Admiral is larger, with more facilities including the new pool. Families should check room sizes, and travellers wanting to be near Tivoli should look at Hotel Danmark or the Tivoli Hotel instead.
