The Dallas Museum of Art is the anchor of the Arts District and one of the best-value museum visits in the United States: general admission has been free since 2013, and the collection of more than 25,000 works covers five millennia and every continent. The building, by Edward Larrabee Barnes, is a long, calm limestone structure organized along a barrel-vaulted concourse, with a walled sculpture garden and the north entrance opening onto Klyde Warren Park. Inside, the highlights run deep. The European galleries include Monet, Courbet, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Picasso; the American collection has Frederic Church's monumental The Icebergs, Edward Hopper's Lighthouse Hill and a strong Georgia O'Keeffe group; there is a Mondrian and a major run of modern and contemporary work; and the arts of the ancient Americas, Africa, Asia and the Islamic world (including the Keir Collection of Islamic art on long-term loan) give the museum its global reach. Decorative-arts and design galleries, Texas art, and the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection — a recreation of rooms from the Reves villa on the French Riviera, crowded with impressionist paintings and fine furniture — round it out. The Reves rooms and the education galleries were closed for an extended period after storm flooding, with city-funded repairs scheduled to finish around the start of 2026; check what is open before you go. Some temporary exhibitions carry a ticket price, but on the first Sunday of each month those ticketed shows are free too. Free general admission still requires reserving a ticket online. The museum keeps a Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule with late opening hours on selected evenings, and its Late Nights events turn the galleries into an after-hours party.

The DMA is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Texas — its roots go back to an art association founded in 1903 — and it moved downtown to the then-new Arts District in 1984, the first major building in what is now the largest contiguous urban arts district in the country. The decision to drop general admission charges in 2013 was a statement about who museums are for, and it changed the museum's audience: on weekends you will see families, students and first-time museumgoers alongside the dedicated art crowd. A long-term plan to reimagine the campus and its relationship to the street has been in development, so expect some evolution of the entrances and grounds in coming years.

Practicalities: entry is free but ticketed, so reserve online for a specific day; walk-ups are usually accommodated when it is quiet. Hours run late morning to late afternoon, Wednesday through Sunday, with the museum closed Mondays and Tuesdays and occasional evening hours; confirm on the day. Parking is in the museum garage off Harwood Street for a fee, and the Arts District is served by DART light rail at St. Paul and Pearl stations. There is a café and a museum store. Ticketed special exhibitions are the exception to the free rule — they are free on the first Sunday of the month, which makes that day busy.

How to see it in two hours: start upstairs with the ancient Americas and the African galleries, which are among the museum's genuine strengths and often quiet; then the American wing for The Icebergs, the Hopper and the O'Keeffes; then European painting; and finish in the contemporary galleries and the sculpture garden. If the Reves Collection rooms are open, they are an oddity worth seeing — an entire collector's villa interior transplanted to Texas. Families should look for the hands-on family spaces and Open Studio programs. Afterwards, the north doors put you straight onto Klyde Warren Park for lunch from the food trucks, and the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Museum of Asian Art are each a short walk away.
