The Denver Art Museum is the anchor of the Golden Triangle Creative District and the building that tells you Denver takes culture seriously. The campus has three parts. The Hamilton Building, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is the jagged, titanium-clad structure that looks ready to take flight over 13th Avenue; inside, the angles carry on into slanted walls and dramatic atria, with four floors of collection galleries and the big temporary exhibitions. Across the plaza, the Martin Building is Gio Ponti's 1971 tower, his only completed building in North America, wrapped in a million reflective tiles and reopened in 2021 after a full renovation that added the glass Sie Welcome Center; its eight floors hold the museum's core collections, including the Indigenous arts of North America galleries that are among the most important anywhere, plus Latin American, Asian, European and Western American art. The newest piece, The Kirkland, showcases decorative arts, Colorado fine art and a Vance Kirkland retrospective. General admission covers the whole campus; ticketed shows cost extra, and the current headline exhibition, DIVA, runs through January 31, 2027. Youth 18 and under are always free, which makes this one of the best family museums in the region. Note the schedule: the museum closes on Wednesdays, opens late on Tuesdays, and charges peak pricing on weekends.

The museum's architecture is half the visit, so plan to see both main buildings from outside before diving in. The Ponti tower was a radical idea in 1971 — a museum designed as a vertical fortress, with irregular slit windows framing the mountains and the city — and the renovation finally opened it up properly, adding rooftop terraces and the welcome center that now serves as the campus front door. The Hamilton Building, completed in 2006, answered with deconstructivist drama: Libeskind said he was inspired by the peaks of the Rockies and the geometric crystals of the foothills, and the building is as much sculpture as gallery. Walking between them across the plaza, past the giant sculptures that dot the Civic Center cultural complex, is the moment the district makes sense.

Inside, prioritize. The Indigenous arts galleries in the Martin Building are the collection's crown, presented with input from Native artists and communities and covering both historic and contemporary work. The Western American galleries put Remington and Russell alongside newer voices questioning the frontier myth. The Hamilton floors hold modern and contemporary work and the big touring exhibitions; DIVA is the current ticketed headliner, priced as a modest add-on to general admission. With kids, look for the hands-on studios and activity spaces sprinkled through both buildings. Allow at least three hours for a real visit and wear comfortable shoes — the campus is bigger than it looks.

Logistics are simple. The museum sits a short walk south of the Colorado State Capitol and Civic Center Park, so pair it with the free Capitol tour or the Clyfford Still Museum next door. It is open Thursday through Monday 10am to 5pm, Tuesday until 8pm, and closed Wednesdays plus Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Colorado residents pay a lower rate than visitors, weekends and holidays carry peak pricing, and the museum runs occasional free general admission days (November 7 and December 8 in 2026), which are busy but excellent value. Book timed tickets online for ticketed exhibitions, especially on weekends.
