The Zwinger is the building that made Dresden the Florence on the Elbe. Augustus the Strong had his architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser build it in the early eighteenth century as a stage for court festivals, and it still feels like one: a huge garden courtyard framed by galleries and pavilions, the gilded Crown Gate, the Wall Pavilion crowded with stone satyrs and the Nymphs’ Bath, a hidden grotto of cascades and statues. The courtyard is free to walk through. Inside, the State Art Collections run three museums. The headline is the Old Masters Picture Gallery in the Semper building, reopened in 2020 after a long renovation, where Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, with its two famous bored cherubs, hangs alongside Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus, Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window and rooms of Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto’s views of Dresden itself. The Porcelain Collection shows the Meissen and East Asian porcelain Augustus collected with a passion, and the Mathematical-Physical Salon holds globes, clocks and scientific instruments. This page links to a Tiqets guided tour of the Old Town, the Frauenkirche interior and the Zwinger.
How to visit: the courtyard is open from early morning to late evening and costs nothing. Gallery and museum tickets are sold by the State Art Collections online and at the desks, and the Old Masters gallery is generally closed on Mondays, so plan around that. The Tiqets product linked here is a two-hour German-language guided walk by Erlebnistouren Dresden that covers the Old Town and its history, the Frauenkirche interior and a visit to the Zwinger, with a headset so you can hear the guide. It runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 and meets in the basement of the tourist information at Neumarkt 2. Gallery admission is not listed as included, so buy the Old Masters ticket separately if you want to go inside.
What to expect: give the gallery at least ninety minutes. The Sistine Madonna has a room to itself at the end of the main axis, and the Canaletto room is the best way to understand how much of the city you see outside was rebuilt from paintings and photographs. Parts of the Zwinger complex have been under long-running restoration, so expect scaffolding on some pavilions and check which areas are open on your day.
Making the most of it: walk up onto the gallery roofs above the Wall Pavilion for the best view of the courtyard, then cross to the Theaterplatz for the Semperoper and the Hofkirche. In winter the courtyard is quiet and atmospheric in the early morning, and the Striezelmarkt is a ten-minute walk away.
