Temppeliaukio Church is the building visitors remember. Designed by the brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and completed in 1969, it was quarried directly out of the bedrock of a small square in the Töölö district, so from the street it looks like little more than a rocky mound crowned with a copper disc. Inside, the walls are the rough, untreated granite, a band of glass skylights separates the rock from the copper-lined dome, and the light shifts with the weather. The acoustics are excellent, which is why the church is a popular concert venue. It is still an active parish church, so it closes for weddings, christenings, funerals and the Sunday service. Entry is a modest fee for adults and free for under-18s and Helsinki Card holders.
How to visit: the church sits at Lutherinkatu 3, about fifteen minutes on foot from the railway station or a short tram ride. A skip-the-queue ticket from Tiqets is handy in summer and when cruise ships are in, when tour groups arrive in waves; at quieter times you can also buy at the front desk. The entrance closes ten minutes before closing time, and hours change weekly around church events, so check the schedule before you go.
What to expect: a visit takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Sit for a while to take in the light and the sound; if someone is playing the organ or the grand piano, stay. Photography is allowed when no service is under way. Climb the stairs to the small gallery for the best view of the dome.
Making the most of it: try to time your visit for an evening concert, when the acoustics come into their own. Combine it with the Sibelius Monument and the waterfront at Hietaniemi, or with the Ateneum and Oodi on the way back to the centre. The Tiqets bundle with the SkyWheel is good value if you plan to do both.
