Hotel Saint Augustine is the most peaceful stay in Houston and the perfect base for art lovers. Opened by Bunkhouse, the Texas boutique-hotel group known for Hotel San José and Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin, and now part of the Hyatt family, it sits in a leafy residential corner of Montrose directly across from the Menil Collection campus, a short walk from the Rothko Chapel, the Cy Twombly gallery and the Menil Drawing Institute. The architecture, by the Texas firm Lake Flato, takes its cue from the neighborhood: five two-story buildings arranged around four garden courtyards, connected by open-air bridges and porches, with landscape design that brings shade and greenery into every view. There are 71 rooms and suites in six categories, from compact Petite Queen rooms to Atelier suites, decorated with warm woods, art and vintage pieces and many opening onto balconies or courtyards. The circular courtyard pool is reserved for guests and feels like a cloister, open from dawn to dusk with drinks and food ordered from your lounge chair. Perseid, the full-service restaurant from the acclaimed Houston chef Aaron Bludorn, is a destination dining room in its own right, and the Augustine Lounge offers a curated menu through the day. Well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small fee, children are welcome with an adult reservation holder aged 21 or over, and parking is by valet, with ample free street parking around the hotel. It is not cheap, and it is not close to downtown, but for a calm, design-led stay it has no equal in the city.
The magic of the Saint Augustine is the neighborhood. You can walk out of the front door and into the Menil within minutes, spend a morning with the Surrealists, cross to the Rothko Chapel and be back by the pool in the afternoon. Montrose is full of cafes, bars and restaurants, and the Museum District and Buffalo Bayou Park are a short drive or bike ride away.
Rooms are quiet and thoughtfully designed, and the courtyards make the hotel feel far smaller and more private than its size suggests. Ask for a room overlooking a courtyard garden. Perseid is a destination restaurant in its own right, so reserve dinner when you book the room, especially on weekends.
The hotel suits couples, solo travellers and art and architecture lovers; families are welcome, but the atmosphere is calm. Downtown, the Galleria and NASA all require a car or rideshare. Bike rentals have been paused, so check with the hotel if you plan to cycle. The rooms are designed for slowing down: generous beds, good lighting, balconies or courtyard access in many categories and a calm, residential atmosphere that feels far from the freeway. Check-in starts in the afternoon, and guests must be 21 or older to hold the reservation. Because the hotel is small, it books up quickly on weekends and during art events, so reserve early and ask for a courtyard-facing room when you do. Dogs are welcome, which makes it a rare luxury option for travellers with a pet.
