The Peninsula arrived in Istanbul in February 2023 and quickly became one of the most acclaimed hotels in Europe, named Europe's top city hotel in the Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards in 2024. It occupies four buildings on the Karakoy waterfront within Galataport, the redeveloped cruise and shopping district at the mouth of the Golden Horn; three of them are protected historic landmarks from the early 1900s, carefully restored, and the lobby evokes the elegance of an early twentieth-century ferry terminal. There are 177 rooms and suites, starting at a generous size, with the best facing the Bosphorus and the old city skyline across the water, and the Peninsula Suite is one of the largest in the city. Outside, a quarter of a kilometre of gardens runs along the Bosphorus, with a 25-metre outdoor pool and private cabanas, and the hotel has its own boat dock. The rooftop restaurant and bar serve Turkish and Asian flavors with views over the strait and the old city, and the Lobby restaurant offers all-day dining. The Peninsula Spa and Wellness Centre is enormous by city standards, about 1,675 square metres, with a 25-metre indoor pool, hammams and private treatment rooms. The location blends luxury with access: Galata Tower and the Galata Bridge are walkable, the T1 tram runs along the waterfront to Sultanahmet, and Karakoy's restaurants, galleries and cafes are on the doorstep, including Istanbul Modern next door at Galataport.

Who it suits: travelers who want contemporary five-star luxury with resort-style facilities, families who want two pools, and couples who want a Bosphorus view without being far from the old city. It is also a strong choice for winter visits, because the indoor pool and spa make a grey day pleasant. Rooms facing the water and the old city are the ones to book; city-view rooms are generous but lack the drama.

Location math: Karakoy is the hinge of the city. The Galata Tower is about ten minutes uphill on foot, the Galata Bridge and the Spice Bazaar fifteen to twenty minutes on foot across the water, and Sultanahmet is a short T1 tram or taxi ride. Ferries to Kadikoy and Uskudar on the Asian side leave from the Karakoy pier nearby. Galataport is busy when cruise ships are in, and the waterfront promenade fills with visitors, though the hotel's gardens remain calm.

Practical notes: rates are at the top of the Istanbul market, and the two percent accommodation tax applies on top. Book rooftop tables for sunset ahead, ask about boat transfers from the private dock, and check pool and garden opening in the cooler months. Families should ask about connecting rooms and the children's amenities, and anyone arriving by cruise ship will find the hotel a few minutes' walk from the Galataport terminal. Non-guests can book the rooftop restaurant, which is a good way to sample the hotel and its view of the old city before committing to a stay.
