Before the modern road, the way from Kotor up to Njeguši and Cetinje, the old Montenegrin capital, was a mule and caravan track cut into the mountain in dozens of tight switchbacks. Known as the Ladder of Kotor, it is now one of the best hikes on the bay. The trail starts at the northern edge of the Old Town near the Škurda river and climbs steadily across the bare limestone slope behind the city walls, with the Fortress of St John below you after the first stretch and the whole inner bay opening out as you gain height. Most walkers turn around wherever they like, often after an hour or two, while stronger hikers continue towards the village of Krstac on the old road to Lovćen. The trail itself is free.
How it works: follow the signs from the Old Town’s north side to the trailhead and simply climb. The path is stony and exposed, with a few small cafés or springs along the way in season, but you should carry plenty of water and sun protection.
What to expect: it is a serious uphill walk on loose stone. Coming down is harder on the knees than going up, so walking poles help. Mist can roll in fast in the cooler months.
Making the most of it: start early in summer, or choose a clear autumn day, when the light is soft and the air cool. Combine it with the City Walls for a full mountain day, using the official entrances and ticket for the fortress itself. Do not attempt the full route in rain or poor visibility.
