Sveti Stefan

Montenegro’s island village, from the shore

Sveti Stefan is the postcard of Montenegro: a fortified fishing village of stone houses and red roofs on a tiny islet, tied to the mainland by a narrow sandbar with pink-tinged beaches on either side. The National Tourist Organisation puts it about a 15-minute drive from Budva on the coastal road towards Petrovac. Around sixty years ago the whole village was turned into a hotel resort, and it has drawn film stars and celebrities ever since. The island itself is reserved for resort guests and its access rules change, so for most visitors the experience is the view: from the viewpoints on the coastal road above, from the public part of the beach and from the coastal footpath through the pines towards the neighbouring bays.

How to see it: stop at the lay-bys on the main road above the village for the classic photograph, then walk down to the beach. A coastal path runs north through the trees towards Miločer and the neighbouring bays, a pleasant short walk.

What to expect: parking is limited in summer, and parts of the beach are run by the resort and charge for loungers. The island cannot usually be entered without a reservation at the resort or one of its restaurants.

Making the most of it: come in the late afternoon for the warm light on the roofs, combine it with Budva Old Town, and bring a swimsuit in summer for the public stretch of beach.
