Hotel Cattaro takes its name from the Venetian name for Kotor, and it is the most atmospheric address inside the walls. The complex joins three historic buildings: a theatre from the Napoleonic period, a prince’s palace and a city guard tower that served a military purpose in the 1500s. Just off the Square of Arms, it puts the Sea Gate, the cathedral and the walls a few minutes’ walk away. There are 19 rooms, including two suites, among them a two-bedroom Deluxe Suite of about 80 square metres with a living room, which suits families. The Royal restaurant serves international and local dishes, and the As pub completes the complex. Rooms mix stone walls and period details with modern comfort.
Living in it: you step straight out into the Old Town, so you can climb the walls at opening and wander the squares after the day visitors leave. The historic buildings give each room a slightly different character.
Trade-offs: the Old Town is car-free, so arrange luggage and parking in advance, and the main square can be lively on summer evenings. Rates are higher than outside the walls, especially in high season.
