City Train in Luxembourg’s Old Town

The fortress city without the climb

The City Train, long known locally as the Pétrusse Express, is the gentlest way to grasp the layout of Luxembourg City. From its stop on Montée de Clausen, near the entrance to the Bock Casemates, it winds through the cobbled lanes of the old town and past the casemates, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the promenade along the Alzette, dipping into the valleys that are a steep walk on foot. The ride lasts about 35 to 40 minutes, and a recorded commentary in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish and other languages explains the fortress and its history. Tiqets sells mobile tickets that you show to the conductor, and a combination ticket with the seven-museum pass is also available. The train is seasonal, running daily from late March until early November.

How it works: book on your phone, go to the Montée de Clausen stop and show the ticket to the conductor, who assigns seats. Trains leave at regular intervals during the season, so there is no need to time things precisely. Headphones and the audio guide come with the ride.

What to expect: the train is slow and open-sided, so dress for the weather. It is a sightseeing overview rather than a deep tour, but it is excellent for seeing the gorges, the bridges and the lower town without the climb back up. It suits families, older travellers and anyone with tired legs.

Making the most of it: ride it on your first morning to get your bearings, then walk the Corniche and the Grund at your own pace. Because it starts beside the Bock Casemates, it pairs neatly with a casemates tour. Outside the season, use the free lifts and the e-bike rental for the same valley views.
