Catalonia Atocha is one of the most practical mid-range bases in central Madrid, especially for families and for travellers planning day trips. The hotel is at Calle de Atocha 81, in an early twentieth-century building that forms part of a historic block, between the Antón Martín area and the Atocha roundabout. That puts it about ten minutes on foot from the Golden Triangle of Art, the Reina Sofía, the Prado and the Thyssen, and close to the Barrio de las Letras, with its tapas bars and the Plaza de Santa Ana, while Atocha station, the hub for high-speed trains and for commuter lines to El Escorial and beyond, is about fifteen minutes' walk away. The hotel has more than one hundred and seventy rooms, following an expansion completed in 2024, and many of them have private terraces. For families, the key feature is the choice of Family and Deluxe Family rooms, with twin beds and bunks, which allow four people to share comfortably. On the seventh floor, a rooftop pool and solarium open in the summer months, closing from around mid-October to the end of April. There is a new gym with cardio and weights, and a new spa area. A gastrobar serves food and drinks throughout the day, room service is available, and breakfast is a buffet. The style is modern and comfortable, with the reliable service and value for which the Spanish Catalonia chain is known. The surrounding area is a mix of local life and visitor attractions: the Antón Martín market, a classic neighbourhood food market with modern stalls, is close by, as is the Lavapiés district, Madrid's most multicultural neighbourhood, full of bars and international restaurants.

Who it suits: families who need a room for four with a reasonable budget; travellers planning day trips to Toledo, El Escorial or beyond from Atocha station; art lovers who want to walk to the museums; and couples who appreciate a rooftop pool in summer. The building is in a busy street, so it is lively by day, but the rooms are modern and well insulated. It is less ideal for those who want to be right next to the Gran Vía or the Royal Palace, which are a longer walk or a short metro ride away.

Living in it: book a Family or Deluxe Family room early in peak seasons, as they are popular. Ask for a room with a terrace, and plan a swim in the rooftop pool in summer; it closes for the colder months, roughly from mid-October to the end of April. Use the gastrobar for a light meal after a long day, but explore the Barrio de las Letras and Lavapiés for dinner. The Reina Sofía is the closest of the big museums, a short walk away, and the Retiro is about fifteen minutes on foot.

Value: rates are mid-range and often good value for the location and facilities, with higher prices in spring, autumn and during big events. Madrid does not currently charge a tourist tax. Choose it for a reliable, family-friendly base near the museums and the station, with a summer pool on the roof.
