When people say they want to see the desert from Marrakech, Agafay is the realistic answer. The great sand dunes of the Sahara at Merzouga or Zagora are a long drive across the Atlas, best done as a two- or three-night trip, but the Agafay, about forty-five minutes southwest of the city, gives you desert landscape in an afternoon. It is not a sand sea: it is a rocky desert, a plateau of bare, rolling hills and dry valleys of pale gold and pink stone, sparsely dotted with shrubs, with the snowy High Atlas rising behind it and, on the far side, the blue water of the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir. In the last decade it has become Marrakech's adventure playground and its glamping hotspot. Dozens of camps of Berber-style tents, from simple to very luxurious, offer lunches, sunset dinners with music and overnight stays under clear skies, and operators run quad bikes, buggies, camel rides, horse rides and walks. The most popular formats are a half-day quad or buggy ride, a camel ride at sunset or a dinner evening with a show at a camp, and many visitors combine two. It is genuinely beautiful at golden hour, when the hills turn amber against the mountains, and on a clear night the stars are a revelation after the city. The linked Tiqets product is a three-hour half-day trip with hotel pickup, a guided ride of about two hours on quads through the Agafay hills with views over the lake, and a break for traditional tea. Like everywhere popular, quality varies: choose operators with good safety records and helmets, and be wary of the cheapest packages.
Safety and choosing an operator: quad biking is the headline activity, and it is real off-road driving on rough tracks. The UK government updated its Morocco advice in August 2026 with notes on quad biking and adventure activities, and the sensible rules apply: wear the helmet, drive within your limits, insist on a briefing and a guide who keeps the group together, and check what your travel insurance covers. Children usually ride as passengers with an adult, or on smaller quads under supervision, depending on the operator. Dust is part of the deal; scarves and sunglasses are usually provided or sold on site, and you will want closed shoes.
Camps and sunsets: if you would rather sit than drive, book a camp lunch or a sunset dinner, where a pool, a terrace and a tagine with a view of the Atlas are the attractions. Camel rides of half an hour to an hour are offered at most camps. The best camps are calm and stylish, with good food and limited numbers; the cheapest can feel like a production line. Nights are cold in winter, even when the days are warm, so take a jacket. In summer the middle of the day is very hot, and late afternoon trips are the only sensible choice.
Agafay or the Sahara: Agafay is about atmosphere, views and activities within easy reach of the city, not about towering sand dunes. If golden dunes are your dream, budget at least two nights for a trip over the Atlas via Ait Benhaddou to Zagora or, better, Merzouga. If you have only a few days in Marrakech, Agafay at sunset delivers much of the magic with none of the long drives.

Pairs Well With
High Atlas Day Trip to Imlil & Toubkal
The snow-capped wall on the city's horizon is about ninety minutes away: Berber villages, walnut groves and mule trails at the foot of Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. The region is still rebuilding after the 2023 earthquake, and a respectful day visit with a local guide helps.
Sunrise Hot-Air Balloon Flight
Drift over the palm groves, Berber villages and stony plains north of Marrakech as the sun comes up behind the Atlas, then breakfast in a tent. An early start and a big-ticket splurge; choose a properly licensed operator after the 2025 safety crackdown.
Essaouira Day Trip
The windswept Atlantic port about two and a half hours west of Marrakech: a UNESCO-listed walled medina of white houses and blue shutters, cannon-lined ramparts, a working fishing harbor and a long beach. The Tiqets pick is a guided day tour with pickup.
