The Palmeraie, the great palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech, is where the city goes to breathe, and Jnane Tamsna is its most personal hotel. It is owned and run by Meryanne Loum-Martin, a Paris-trained lawyer turned interior designer, and her husband Gary Martin, an American ethnobotanist, and it reflects both of them: the architecture and interiors are elegant, earthy and quietly Moroccan, while the gardens are a living botanical project. Over more than twenty years they have planted nine acres with over seven hundred plant varieties, among them palms, olives, citrus, pomegranates, roses, herbs and a series of organic vegetable gardens that supply the kitchen with produce from around the world. The hotel describes itself as black-owned and family-run, and the atmosphere is more country house than resort. There are just 23 individual rooms and suites spread across several houses in the gardens, each decorated differently with Moroccan textiles, handmade furniture and art, and the property can also be rented as private villas or taken over entirely for weddings and events. Three swimming pools, each with a different landscape design, are scattered through the grounds, so it never feels crowded, and there is a tennis court near the Moussafir pool. The restaurant serves seasonal Moroccan and Mediterranean cooking built around the gardens, with a bar and cafe, and meals can be taken by the pools or under the trees. Garden walks with the owners or the team, cooking classes and yoga are among the activities, and the hotel arranges excursions into the city and the mountains. It is a calm, intimate alternative to the Medina, best for travelers who want to retreat between bouts of sightseeing.

Who it suits: couples and families who want space, gardens and a slower pace, garden lovers who will appreciate the planting, and groups or wedding parties who can take a whole house. It is also good for longer stays, when the energy of the Medina is best enjoyed in small doses. If you want to walk out of the door into the souks, choose a riad instead.

Location math: the Palmeraie lies on the northern outskirts of the city, so you will rely on taxis or hotel transfers to reach the Medina, typically a drive of around twenty minutes depending on traffic and where you are dropped, and a little less to Gueliz and the Jardin Majorelle. The airport is a longer drive across town. In return you get silence at night, birdsong at dawn and open skies, and the Atlas is visible on clear days.

Practical notes: rates are in the upper-middle to luxury range, varying with the room and season, and private villa rentals are priced separately. Book early for spring and autumn, when the gardens are at their best and the weather ideal; winter nights in the Palmeraie are cool, so ask about heating. Arrange transfers in advance for evenings in the Medina. A per-person tourist tax is added per night.
