SEA LIFE Munich

From the Isar to the ocean, under one roof

SEA LIFE Munich is the city's rainy-day answer for families, and a good partner for a visit to the Olympic Park. The aquarium stands on the north side of the Olympic Lake, at Willi-Daume-Platz, a few minutes' walk from the Olympic Tower, and it tells a story that starts close to home: the route follows the water from the Isar, Munich's Alpine river, along the Danube to the Black Sea, then through the Mediterranean and on to the tropical oceans. It is a smart idea, because it begins with fish that children may see in Bavarian rivers, such as trout and other native species, before moving on to the colourful reef fish, rays, seahorses and jellyfish of warmer seas. The highlight is the glass tunnel, surrounded by around 400,000 litres of water, where blacktip reef sharks glide overhead along with Gonzales, a green sea turtle described as the only sea turtle in Bavaria. Along the way there are touch pools, where children can feel crabs and anemones under supervision, and talks and feeding demonstrations at set times. The exhibition is compact rather than vast, and adults who know the great aquariums of Lisbon, Genoa or Valencia will find it modest, but for children aged around three to ten it is an engaging couple of hours, and its conservation messages about protecting rivers and oceans are well pitched. The aquarium opens all year, from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and to 6pm at weekends, and there are seasonal events and trails, such as a pirate treasure hunt running until 18 November 2026. Tickets are cheaper when booked online in advance, and combination tickets with other attractions, such as the Allianz Arena tour or Andechs Monastery, are available.

How to plan your visit: take the U3 to Olympiazentrum and walk across the Olympic Park to the lake, around ten minutes. Book a timed ticket online, which is usually cheaper than paying at the door, and arrive at the start of your slot. Allow around one and a half to two hours. Afterwards, walk around the Olympic Lake and climb the Olympic Hill for views over the park and the city, or head to BMW Welt and the BMW Museum across the ring road, which are a short walk away and make a good second stop for families.

When to go: SEA LIFE is busiest on rainy weekends and during school holidays, when the narrow corridors can feel crowded, so a weekday morning is ideal. The aquarium is fully indoors, so it works well in any weather, and in winter it combines nicely with the Olympic Park's ice rink and seasonal events.

Things to know: some areas on the ground floor and in the basement are dimly lit, and the entrance has a small threshold, though most of the route is step-free or reachable by lift and the tested areas meet German accessibility criteria for visitors with walking disabilities. Buggies are generally fine. There is a cafe and a gift shop at the exit. If you have only one family day, Hellabrunn Zoo offers more for the money; but SEA LIFE is the better choice on a wet afternoon, or as a short add-on to a day at the Olympic Park.
