Barr Al Jissah

Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa

A self-contained beach resort in a mountain-ringed bay south of the city, with a 500-metre private beach, Muscat’s only lazy river and plenty for children. The family favourite.

★★★★★

Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa is Muscat’s great beach resort, set in its own bay among rugged mountains on the coast south of the old city. It is a complete destination in itself, made up of several hotel wings around a 500-metre private beach, with a wide choice of pools, Muscat’s only lazy river, a big range of restaurants and bars, a spa and a long list of activities on land and sea. Families are especially well looked after, with children’s facilities, water play and space to run around, and the resort is known for its work protecting the sea turtles that nest on the bay’s beaches. The setting is spectacular: the cliffs, the turquoise water and the Omani-palace architecture make it feel far from the city, though Mutrah and Old Muscat are a short drive away. Water sports, diving and boat trips leave from the resort, and dolphin trips are among the activities on offer. It is around 45 minutes from Muscat International Airport.

Location and getting around: the resort lies in Barr Al Jissah, on the coast beyond Old Muscat, at the end of a winding road through the mountains. Old Muscat, the National Museum and Mutrah Souq are a short taxi ride away, while the Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House are further along the coast towards the airport. Most guests use taxis or hotel transport for sightseeing, and many hardly leave at all.

Rooms and who it suits: the resort’s wings each have their own character, from the relaxed, family-friendly main hotel to the more formal grand hotel, and rooms range from garden-view rooms to suites with sea views and balconies. It suits families above all, and also couples who want a beach holiday with everything on site.

Good to know: rates are high in the cool season and over holidays, so book early and check whether breakfast and resort facilities are included in your rate. Ask which wing your room is in, as the resort is large and some rooms are a long walk from the beach. Turtle-watching activities depend on the nesting season, so ask the resort about timing.
