Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Sharks overhead, any weather

Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach is the Grand Strand's one serious aquarium and, on a wet, windy or blazing afternoon, the most dependable plan on the coast. It opened in 1997 at Broadway at the Beach, the lakeside shopping and entertainment complex just inland from the oceanfront, and it has been a family institution ever since. The headline is Dangerous Reef, the walk-through tunnel where sand tiger sharks, sawfish, rays, big groupers and a green sea turtle pass close over your head, and where a moving walkway lets you glide through or step off and linger. Around it, the galleries are designed for families: a stingray touch pool for hands-on time, penguins for the cute finale, colorful Pacific reef fish, eels and octopus, and daily dive presentations that explain what you are looking at. It is not as large as the big city aquariums, and it is busiest exactly when the weather drives everyone off the beach, but it is polished, well run and genuinely good for children. Current hours run from 9 a.m. into the evening daily (until 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday), so it also works as an after-dinner outing. Parking is free, re-entry is allowed with a stamp or wristband, and the Tiqets link sells dated entry tickets plus a combo with two more Broadway at the Beach attractions. Note that Ripley's separate Haunted Adventure is closed from November 2026 to March 2027; the aquarium is open.

Dangerous Reef is the reason to go, so give it time. The tank is the largest in the building, and the tunnel puts big animals directly above and beside you. Sharks circle on their own rhythm, so the best views come to those who wait a few minutes rather than ride straight through; quieter hours, early in the day or in the evening, let you step off the walkway and watch at your own pace. Look for the sawfish resting on the sand and the sea turtle cruising the upper water.

The rest of the visit flows easily. The stingray touch pool is the hit with younger visitors (two fingers, gently, as the staff will remind you), the penguin habitat is the photo stop, and smaller galleries cover reef fish, jellyfish, eels and freshwater species. Check the posted schedule on arrival for dive shows and feedings and build your route around them. Complimentary wheelchairs and noise-reducing headphones are available at Guest Services on a first-come basis, strollers are welcome, and stroller rental is available. Allow at least two hours; families with small children often stay longer.

Timing matters more than anything else. The aquarium fills fast when rain or cold wind sends the beach crowd indoors, so if the forecast looks iffy, go first thing in the morning or after dinner. In November and winter it is one of the attractions that keeps full daily hours, which makes it a natural anchor for an off-season day: aquarium in the morning, Broadway at the Beach for lunch and shopping, and the SkyWheel at dusk. Buying online in advance means you skip the ticket line on busy days.
