Robert Mondavi Winery is the building that launched modern Napa Valley, and in 2026 it is the most talked-about visit in the valley again. Robert Mondavi founded it in 1966 as the first major winery built in Napa after Prohibition, and the Mission-style arch and bell tower designed by architect Cliff May became the region's most recognizable image. After roughly three years closed, the estate reopened on April 20, 2026, timed to its sixtieth anniversary, following a transformation that industry estimates put at around 200 million dollars under owner Constellation Brands. May's arch and tower were restored; a new inverted-gable canopy by Aidlin Darling Design now shelters indoor-outdoor tasting spaces with vineyard views; a new To Kalon Cellar brings optical sorting and gravity-flow winemaking; and the old bell tower has become the Tower Library, an intimate room holding older Mondavi vintages. Most guests are hosted in the light-filled Vineyard Room and on its terraces, looking straight over the To Kalon Vineyard, one of the most famous Cabernet sites in the world and now certified organic. The core experiences are tiered — the Pioneer tasting of Napa and Estates wines, the Visionary tasting exploring terroir across the estates, and the Legend Tasting and Tour of the top Reserve wines — with tasting fees reported in the range of about 60 to 150 dollars per person, a three-course Mondavi Table pairing, and guided cellar and walking tours. Since July 2026 the estate has also hosted the To Kalon Collective, private tastings that compare wines from four labels sharing the vineyard. Reservations through the winery or Tock are the norm. It is polished and corporate in places, but no winery tells the story of Napa better.
Why it matters. When Robert Mondavi left his family's Charles Krug winery and built his own estate in Oakville in 1966, Napa had a few dozen wineries and little international reputation. Mondavi championed varietal labeling, French oak, cold fermentation, wine with food and, above all, the idea that Napa could stand beside Bordeaux and Burgundy. His Fumé Blanc, his Reserve Cabernets from To Kalon, his partnership with Baron Philippe de Rothschild in Opus One across the highway and his relentless hosting of visitors set the template for the valley's hospitality. Standing under the arch is, in a real sense, standing at the start of the Napa you are visiting.
What the rebuild changed. The three-year project kept the soul of Cliff May's design while modernizing everything around it. The north wing now houses production, private tasting rooms and guest experiences; the new culinary building and its veranda support a bigger food-and-wine program; landscape architects reworked the gardens; and the Tower Library and glass-enclosed Barrel Room give smaller groups a sense of occasion. The To Kalon Vineyard itself, planted in the nineteenth century and long considered one of the great vineyards of the New World, received organic certification, and its fruit is now shared across several Constellation labels — which is the idea behind the To Kalon Collective tasting, with private sessions reported at around 180 to 195 dollars.
Planning your visit. Book ahead, especially for weekends and harvest, and choose the Pioneer tasting for a first look or the Legend tasting and tour if you want the Reserve wines and the full walk. Because it sits on Highway 29 in Oakville, between Yountville and Rutherford, Mondavi pairs naturally with lunch in Yountville and an afternoon at one of the smaller estates nearby. Allow at least ninety minutes, plan a driver, and remember that tasting fees are per person and add up quickly across a day; two or three reservations is plenty.
