Château Eza is a hotel of pure romance. It is made of a cluster of medieval stone houses on the seaward edge of Eze village, once the residence of Prince William of Sweden, who lived here in the 1920s, and it hangs over the cliff some 400 metres above the Mediterranean, with nothing between its terraces and the horizon. There are only around fourteen rooms and suites, each different — stone walls, beams, antiques, fireplaces in some, terraces or balconies with sea views in many — and the intimacy is the point: this is a place to be alone together, not to be seen. The hotel's gourmet restaurant holds a Michelin star, and its terrace, cantilevered over the void, is one of the most celebrated dining spots on the Riviera, for lunch with the coast stretching to Cap Ferrat or dinner as the lights come on far below. A bar and lounge, room service, massages and in-room treatments complete the offer, but there is no spa or pool; the luxury here is the view and the silence. The hotel is five-star rated and seasonal: in 2026 it opened on 3 February and closes on 9 November, so expect it to reopen around early February 2027. Because the village is car-free, luggage is carried up by porters from the car park at the foot of Eze, and the hotel is not accessible to wheelchairs. Rates are high and the minimum stay may apply at peak times.
Why stay: Eze is one of the most visited villages on the coast by day, but in the evening the crowds leave and it becomes silent, lit only by lanterns. Staying at Château Eza lets you experience the village at its most magical: sunrise over the sea from your terrace, an early walk to the Exotic Garden before the gates fill, and dinner as the sky turns violet. It is the honeymoon or proposal hotel of the Riviera, and many couples come just for lunch on the terrace even if they cannot stay.
Living in it: rooms are individually decorated with antiques and stone, and some are compact; ask about views, terraces and stairs when booking, as the building is a maze of levels and steps. Not suitable for small children or guests with limited mobility. The restaurant demands a reservation, especially for terrace tables at sunset. Parking is at the foot of the village; staff help with bags. In summer, the village lanes are busy by day, so plan excursions for the middle of the day and return for the evening.
Base math: Eze sits on the Moyenne Corniche between Nice and Monaco, about twenty to thirty minutes by car to either and less by taxi. Regional buses stop at the foot of the village, and the train station at Eze-sur-Mer is down the Nietzsche Path or a short drive. Villa Ephrussi on Cap Ferrat is fifteen minutes away. Pair a night or two here with a city base in Nice or Monaco for a perfect Riviera balance.
