teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka

A real garden that lights up when you walk through it

teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka is the art collective's permanent outdoor work in the south of the city, set inside Nagai Botanical Garden in Nagai Park. By day the botanical garden is a quiet, well-kept public garden; after sunset, the grounds become an artwork. Glowing ovoid sculptures stand on the lawns and shift color when touched or pushed, sending light and sound rippling to their neighbors; lamps hidden among the trees answer the movement of people walking past; the surface of the pond becomes a field of floating light; and flowers and the forest canopy are lit so that the garden's real plants, rather than projections on a wall, are the canvas. Because the works respond to wind, rain, season and visitors, no two evenings look quite the same, and the garden's own seasonal cycle, from spring blossom to autumn leaves, changes the backdrop throughout the year. The experience is a walk rather than a show: a route of roughly an hour through the garden, at your own pace, with plenty of space compared with indoor immersive exhibitions. It opens from around sunset until 9:30pm, with start times that move with the season, and has irregular closing days, so check the calendar before you go. It runs in light rain, which can make the reflections even better. The garden is about ten minutes on foot from Nagai Station on the Midosuji subway line, around twenty minutes from Namba, which makes it easy to combine with an evening in Minami or Tennoji.

How it compares with teamLab in Tokyo. The famous Tokyo venues are indoor, mirrored, crowded and spectacular; Osaka's garden is outdoors, darker, calmer and more meditative, and it suits people who enjoyed the idea of teamLab but not the queues. It is also much less of a photo-studio experience: many works are best seen from a few steps back, as part of the landscape, and the pleasure is in walking slowly and noticing how the garden reacts. If you have only one evening in Osaka and love art or design, it is a strong alternative to an observation deck.

Practical tips. Book tickets in advance on the official site, especially for weekends, holidays and the autumn season, and arrive near opening time when the light is still changing in the sky. Wear comfortable shoes, since some paths are gravel or uneven, and bring a raincoat rather than an umbrella if the forecast is wet; insect repellent helps in summer and warm layers in winter, when evenings in the open garden are cold. The paths are dark by design, so keep phone torches off to avoid spoiling the effect for others, and strollers can manage most of the route but not every slope. Allow one to two hours including the walk from the station.

Making an evening of it. Nagai Park also contains a large stadium and a natural history museum, which is closed by the time the art opens, so plan dinner around the visit: Tennoji and Abeno are a few stops north on the Midosuji line, and Namba and Dotonbori about twenty minutes away. Couples often pair the garden with the Harukas 300 night view, and families with older children usually find the interactive sculptures the highlight of the trip.
