South Mountain Park and Preserve is one of the largest municipally managed parks in the United States, covering more than 16,000 acres across three mountain ranges — the Ma Ha Tauk, Gila and Guadalupe — on Phoenix's southern edge. More than 100 miles of trails serve hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders, and the park's scenic roads wind up to Dobbins Lookout at 2,330 feet, the highest publicly accessible point, where a stone shelter built in the 1930s frames a panorama of the entire Valley: downtown towers, Camelback, the airport and the distant ranges. Sunset at Dobbins, followed by the city lights coming on below, is one of the great free views in Arizona. On foot, the Holbert Trail climbs from the activity complex past rock art left by the Hohokam, the ancestral people who built the region's canal system, before rising toward Dobbins; the Mormon and National Trails are popular for longer outings, and the National Trail runs the length of the range. Easier walks near the entrance, including petroglyph-viewing spots, suit families. The remodeled South Mountain Visitor Center, open Thursday through Sunday from 9am to 3pm, has refreshed exhibits on the park's geology, wildlife and history. Park entrance and parking hours are 5am to 7pm, while trails stay open until 11pm. Note the Silent Sundays program: on the fourth Sunday of each month, park roads close to motor vehicles from 5am to 7pm, and on other Sundays, Summit Road closes beyond the first mile until 10am, so plan a Sunday drive to Dobbins accordingly.

The scale is the point. Where Camelback is a single, crowded summit, South Mountain is a whole landscape, and once you are a mile up a trail you can have desert canyons, saguaros and boulder fields largely to yourself while the city hums below. It is also a much better bet for mixed groups: the drive to Dobbins Lookout gives non-hikers the same view as the climbers, and the lower trails give families a real desert outing without the scramble. Mountain bikers prize the technical trails of the Desert Classic and National routes.

Plan around the sun. Even in winter, start hikes in the morning or late afternoon, carry ample water and remember that the summit road is shared by cars, cyclists and walkers, with blind curves, narrow sections and drop-offs, so drive slowly and watch for riders. Arrive at Dobbins about forty minutes before sunset for a parking spot on cool-season evenings; the view stays beautiful long after the sun is down, but be aware of the vehicle gate closing times so you are not locked in. The park is also the site of occasional road closures for events such as trail runs, which the city posts in advance.

South Mountain pairs easily with a visit to Tempe or the airport area, and with the Heard Museum for anyone curious about the Hohokam petroglyphs and the people who made them. Respect the rock art: do not touch or chalk the images, and stay on the trails. For visitors who want to feel the desert rather than just see it, South Mountain is the Valley's best-kept secret in plain sight.
