Graduate by Hilton Tempe is the most fun mid-range stay in the East Valley, and a smart base for anyone visiting Arizona State University or wanting Tempe's energy at a fair price. The hotel occupies a renovated building on East Apache Boulevard on the edge of the ASU campus, and like every Graduate it wears its college town on its sleeve: the design leans into Southwest kitsch with Seventies-inspired touches, vintage-style furniture, desert colors and campus references, so it feels warm and witty rather than corporate. Its 140 rooms are modern boutique rooms behind the retro styling, with comfortable beds and good workspaces. On site, the Graduate Food Hall serves breakfast, dinner and drinks in a casual, sociable setting, there is an outdoor pool for Tempe's long warm season, and a fitness center open around the clock. The location is the other selling point. The Valley Metro light rail runs along Apache Boulevard, so you can ride to downtown Tempe and Mill Avenue in minutes, to Tempe Town Lake and Tempe Beach Park, to downtown Phoenix and the Heard Museum, or to Sky Harbor via the airport Sky Train connection, without paying for parking or rideshares. Walk to ASU's Gammage Auditorium, the football stadium and campus events, and to the student cafes and bars of the surrounding streets. Hilton absorbed the Graduate brand in 2024, so Hilton Honors points and status now apply here. This is not a quiet retreat: on game days, graduation weekends and Friday nights the area is busy, and rates spike for big ASU events.
Tempe works well as a base for first-time visitors who want a lively, affordable alternative to Scottsdale: Sky Harbor is a short ride away, Papago Park, the Phoenix Zoo and the Desert Botanical Garden are ten to fifteen minutes north, Tempe Town Lake and Tempe Butte are walkable or one light-rail stop, and Mesa's Spring Training ballparks are close (games from February 19, 2027). With the light rail at the door, a car is optional for an urban stay, though you will want one for hiking further afield.
Booking tips: check the ASU calendar before choosing dates, because home football weekends in the fall, commencement in May and December, and big concerts at the stadium push prices up and fill the hotel. Summer, when students are away and the pool comes into its own, brings the lowest rates. Ask for a room facing away from Apache Boulevard if you are a light sleeper.
Who should stay: visiting ASU families and prospective students, couples and friends who want character at a mid-range price, light-rail travelers who prefer not to drive, and anyone who enjoys a hotel with a sense of humor. Who might not: travelers wanting resort amenities or a quiet desert setting; Tempe Mission Palms downtown or the Marriott Buttes resort nearby suit them better.
