Náplavka is where Prague goes to sit by the river. The name refers to the lower embankment on the New Town bank of the Vltava, below the Rašínovo embankment road, running roughly from the Dancing House south towards Vyšehrad. Once a working quay where barges unloaded timber and goods, it was rediscovered in the 2000s as a public space, and now, from spring to autumn, it is lined with moored boats turned into bars, cafes, galleries and clubs, with food stands and benches along the cobbled quayside. In the evening, especially at weekends, locals spread out along the water's edge with a beer and watch the sun set behind the castle and Petřín on the far bank. It is the most authentic and relaxed way to see Prague's social life, and almost completely free. The big draw for visitors is the Saturday farmers market. Prague City Tourism lists it every Saturday from eight in the morning until two in the afternoon, with more than ninety stalls of fresh Czech farm produce and goods from growers, breeders and makers, plus food and live music; its 2026 calendar runs every Saturday until the week before Christmas. You can graze your way along the quay on sausages, cheeses, pastries, smoked fish, fresh juices and local craft beers and wines, then buy honey, cheese or sweets to take home. It is busy, cheerful and full of locals as well as visitors. Outside market hours, the embankment is a lovely place for a walk at any time of year, and part of a fine riverside route between the National Theatre and Vyšehrad.

Beer and food: Náplavka is one of the best places in Prague to try local craft beer in a relaxed setting, from boats and stalls serving small Czech breweries' beers to the market's own food and drink stands. In summer, the boat bars stay open into the evening and the quayside fills with people; in winter the scene is quieter, and some boats close or reduce their hours, but the market and a riverside walk still make a good Saturday morning. Prices are generally fair, but bring cash as well as cards for smaller stalls.

Doing it well: come to the market early, ideally by nine, for the best choice and before the crowds peak around midday. Bring a reusable bag for purchases and an appetite for tasting. On summer evenings, arrive before sunset to find a spot on the steps by the water. Keep an eye on children near the quay edge, which has no railing in places, and on bikes and scooters using the embankment. Occasionally parts of the embankment are closed for repairs or events, and the market has been cancelled on rare occasions for works, so check before making a special trip.

Fitting it in: Náplavka is just below the Dancing House and a short walk from Karlovo náměstí metro station. A classic Saturday plan is the market for breakfast, the Dancing House for photos, then a walk south along the river to Vyšehrad, or north to the National Theatre and Charles Bridge. In the evening, it is a perfect end to a day, with a beer by the water and the castle lit up across the river. In the warmer months, several riverboat cruises also depart from piers along this stretch of the embankment. The last Saturdays before Christmas often have a festive feel, and the market makes a calmer, more local alternative to the big Christmas markets on the Old Town and Wenceslas squares.
