Eichardt’s Private Hotel is the address for a once-in-a-lifetime Queenstown stay. The heritage building stands on Marine Parade right on the lakefront, where the town meets the water of Queenstown Bay, and its history reaches back more than a century, to the days when Julia Eichardt tended some of the rooms that are now suites. Today the hotel is tiny and intensely personal: seven luxury suites, divided between Lake View and Heritage suites, a penthouse on the top floor with its own dedicated service team, and The Gold Vault, the newest suite, set in a room that once stored a neighbouring bank’s gold from 1887. Guests describe heated bathroom floors, gas fireplaces and turndown service, and the views across the lake to the mountains are the reason to be here. Downstairs, the lively bar looks over the water, and breakfast is one of the most praised things about a stay. For families or longer stays, Eichardt’s also runs a two-bedroom apartment on Earl Street and a three-bedroom residence close by. In 2026 the hotel received a Michelin Key.
Location and getting around: you cannot be more central. Steamer Wharf and the TSS Earnslaw are a couple of minutes’ walk along the lakefront, the restaurants of Beach Street and the Mall are on the doorstep, and the Skyline gondola is about ten minutes on foot up Brecon Street. Adventure operators run their shuttles from the Station Building on Shotover Street, a short stroll away, so you will not need a car in town.
Rooms: with only a handful of suites in the main building, each feels individual, and the Lake View suites are worth the premium for the view across Queenstown Bay. The penthouse suits a celebration, and The Gold Vault is the conversation piece. The apartments give more space and a kitchen if you are travelling as a family or a group.
Who it suits: honeymooners, couples marking a special occasion and travellers who value service and location over facilities such as a pool. It is not a resort, and the appeal is intimacy rather than amenities.
Good to know: the hotel is on the busiest part of the waterfront, so evenings can be lively below. Parking in central Queenstown is limited and costly, so ask the hotel about options before you arrive with a car. The hotel lists The Well Spa among its offerings and can arrange adventures and private dining.
