Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Villas is the San Antonio resort families have returned to for decades, and a recently completed, multi-year renovation of around 100 million dollars has made it more compelling than ever. The resort sits on 300 acres of rolling Hill Country ranchland on the far west side of the city, a few minutes from SeaWorld San Antonio, and its low, ranch-style buildings of limestone and wood feel more like a Texas country retreat than a big hotel. The headline addition is the Big Spring Lagoon, a 2.2-acre swimming lagoon built with Crystal Lagoons technology, with clear blue water, white-sand beaches, cabanas and water activities, and a new lagoon-side restaurant, Aunt Di's Comfort Station. It joins the resort's long-loved five-acre water park, with a lazy river of about 900 feet modeled on a lazy Texas river float, pools and play areas that keep children busy for days. Guest rooms were renovated in 2023, and the spa, Windflower, The Hill Country Spa, was refreshed in 2025 with updated treatment spaces and outdoor areas. For groups and multigenerational families, five new stand-alone villas, each named for a Hill Country river, have four bedrooms, full kitchens and private patios with fire pits. Golfers and casual swingers get Toptracer Range bays, and there are lawns, trails and evening activities across the property. The resort renamed itself to reflect the villa expansion. The trade-offs: it is a drive from downtown and the River Walk, so plan on a car, and resort charges and dining add up, so factor them into the price.
The resort works best as a destination in its own right, with SeaWorld as the main excursion. A typical family stay mixes lagoon and lazy river days with a day at SeaWorld or Aquatica in season, and perhaps an evening at the River Walk downtown, about half an hour away by car depending on traffic. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is also within reasonable driving distance. Because so much is on site, many families barely leave the property, and the lagoon adds a beach-holiday feel that is rare in central Texas.
Room choice matters. Standard rooms suit most families, while the new villas are ideal for grandparents, cousins and friends traveling together who want kitchens and a shared living space. Book lagoon cabanas early in peak season, check the activity schedule on arrival and plan spa treatments for the quieter weekday mornings. The water features are outdoors, so the warmest months are the peak; in cooler months, check which water areas are open and heated.
As a base, the Hyatt suits families with children of all ages, couples looking for a spa and pool break with Texas character, and groups booking villas. It is less suitable for travelers who want to walk to the Alamo and the River Walk each day. Expect busy weekends and school holidays, and book well ahead for spring break and summer. For parents, the practical advantages are real: the water areas are close to the rooms, there is space for children to roam safely, and the slower pace of a Hill Country resort makes the trip feel like a holiday rather than a sightseeing marathon. Grandparents tend to appreciate the spa and the quieter corners of the grounds, while teenagers gravitate to the lagoon and the golf bays.
