The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa is a resort-first choice: a self-contained world of pools, golf and spa on 600 acres of oak-covered hills on the north side of the city, about thirty-five minutes from the airport and a similar drive from downtown. It is enormous, with more than a thousand rooms and suites, and its centerpiece for families is the River Bluff Water Experience, a nine-acre water park with a 1,100-foot lazy river, a 650-foot action river, slides including the Hill Country Plunge, and pools for all ages, open year-round weather permitting, with slides and the lazy river running when it is warm enough. Golfers come for TPC San Antonio, two eighteen-hole championship courses designed by Pete Dye and Greg Norman; the Oaks course has hosted the Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour since 2010. The Lantana Spa offers massages and treatments, and dining spans a steakhouse, a Mexican restaurant, a pizzeria, a sports bar, a cocktail bar and casual cafes. Rooms are spacious and modern, many with balconies looking over the hills or the pools. The trade-offs are distance and extra costs: you will need a car for downtown sightseeing, a daily resort fee covers water park access and other extras, parking is charged, and the scale means busy pools on summer weekends. It shines for families who want a pool-and-park vacation with day trips to SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas, both on the same side of the city, and for golf and spa getaways.
The resort is designed as a destination in its own right. A typical family day might start with breakfast overlooking the hills, then the water park until the afternoon, a break in the room during the hottest hours, and dinner at one of the resort's restaurants as the sun sets over the Hill Country. Water park access is included with the resort fee, though wristbands are limited per room, and cabanas can be reserved for shade and service.
Golfers should book tee times well ahead through the TPC pro shop, especially in spring around the Valero Texas Open. The spa is a calm counterpoint to the busy pools, with treatment rooms and relaxation areas. Couples can find quieter corners at the spa and the cocktail bar, while families gravitate to the water park.
As a base, the JW suits families on a theme-park and pool vacation, golf groups and conference attendees. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is relatively close on the northwest side, SeaWorld is a drive to the west, and Natural Bridge Caverns is reachable to the northeast. Plan one or two dedicated days downtown for the Alamo, the River Walk and the missions, and drive in early to find parking; or split your stay, with a couple of nights downtown and the rest here.
