Mokara Hotel and Spa is the River Walk's most indulgent small hotel, and the one to choose if a spa and a quiet room matter more than a big lobby. Operated by Omni Hotels, it occupies a historic building on West Crockett Street that served as a saddle factory around the turn of the twentieth century, and it sits directly on the downtown River Walk, a short walk from the Alamo, the river cruises and dozens of restaurants. With 99 rooms and suites it is a true boutique, and it holds a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating. The rooms were completely redesigned in a three-month renovation that ran from August to October 2025. The new look leans into the building's past, with hand-stitched leather details and furniture, horsehair-style wallcoverings, handcrafted woods and a calm neutral palette, along with artwork by Dallas artist Lindsey Meyer. New freestanding bathtubs are the centerpiece, and in a rare touch, a personal butler service will draw a bath for you from morning until late evening. The spa is the hotel's identity: a full-service, award-winning spa that draws locals as well as guests, with a long menu of massages, facials and body treatments. The hotel is also known for fine dining, and guests can relax by the pool between treatments. The trade-offs are price and scale: rates are high, the property is small, so it can sell out around events, and families with young children will find more to do at larger hotels. Parking is via valet at downtown rates.
Mokara's appeal is the contrast between the lively River Walk outside and the hushed interior. Couples celebrating an anniversary, a honeymoon or a birthday will find it the most romantic base downtown, especially in a renovated room with a freestanding tub. Book spa treatments when you book the room, as weekend appointments fill quickly, and plan a slow morning with breakfast before the river gets busy.
The location is excellent for walkers. The Alamo, Rivercenter and the Go Rio boat landings are a few minutes away, the River Walk's restaurant stretch is right outside, and Main Plaza, San Fernando Cathedral and The Saga are a short stroll. For dinner, you can stay in for fine dining or walk along the river to dozens of choices. The hotel is close to both the historic core and the newer Museum Reach, which leads north toward the Pearl.
As a base, Mokara suits couples and solo travelers seeking luxury, privacy and pampering, and it works well for a short, spa-focused city break. Larger families and travelers on a budget will be better served elsewhere. Check the current pool and spa hours on arrival, and ask for a river-facing room if views matter to you. The renovation has given the rooms a stronger sense of place, and the leather, wood and saddlery-inspired details tie the hotel to its past as a working building in the heart of the old commercial district. Light sleepers should ask for a room facing away from the busiest stretch of the river, and anyone celebrating should mention it when booking, as small hotels are often able to arrange thoughtful touches. Spa-goers can easily build a whole day around treatments, a swim and a long dinner.
