Observation Deck

Sky Costanera Observation Deck

Santiago and the Andes from about 300 metres up

Sky Costanera is the highest viewpoint in South America and the easiest way to see Santiago whole. It occupies floors 61 and 62 of the Gran Torre Costanera, the glass skyscraper that dominates the Providencia skyline, at a height of about 300 metres. Express lifts whisk you up from the Costanera Center shopping mall, and at the top a fully glazed deck wraps all the way around the tower, so you can trace the city from the green hump of Cerro San Cristóbal and the old centre in the west to the Andes walling in the valley to the east. The upper level, open to the sky behind tall glass panels, is the place to feel the wind and watch the light change on the mountains. Panels help you pick out landmarks, and on clear days you can follow the Mapocho River across the city. It is open every day from morning until late evening, which makes it a good choice for sunset and for the city lights after dark.

How it works: tickets are sold for timed entry slots, online on the official reservation site or at the ticket office. Adults pay a moderate fee, children pay less and infants go free. The deck is open daily, including holidays, from 10:00 to 22:00. The entrance is inside the Costanera Center mall in Providencia, a walk of under ten minutes from Tobalaba metro station on Lines 1 and 4.

What to expect: after a short security check, a fast lift carries you up through the tower, and you step out onto the enclosed 61st floor before climbing to the open-air 62nd floor. There is room to linger, and both levels have views in all directions. Weekends and sunset slots are busiest, and there can be a queue for the lifts down.

Making the most of it: check the weather and air quality first, because haze or low cloud can hide the Andes. The hour before sunset is the classic slot, when the snow turns pink and the city lights come on below you. Allow time afterwards for the restaurants and shops of the Costanera Center, or walk into nearby Providencia for dinner.
