SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium

Sharks, seals and penguins beneath Gangnam

For a family day in Gangnam, or a rainy afternoon anywhere in the city, the aquarium under COEX Mall is the dependable choice. Long known simply as COEX Aquarium, it was acquired by the British attractions group Merlin Entertainments in 2022 and has since been rebranded as SEA LIFE COEX, joining the international SEA LIFE family, with refreshed zones and a stronger focus on conservation messaging. The aquarium is home to more than twenty thousand marine animals arranged through around fourteen themed zones, and the route is easy to follow and well signed. Highlights include the large ocean tanks where sand tiger sharks and rays glide overhead, a seal beach cove, a penguin zone that is always the children's favorite, a delicate seahorse garden, and a newer night-sea theme zone where dimmed lighting brings out bioluminescent and nocturnal species. The walk-through tunnel remains a classic photo moment, and the aquarium mixes in interactive extras: a glass-bottom boat ride over one of the big tanks, a virtual-reality dive, and a daily program of feeds and talks that has included ray and seal feedings and a mermaid performance. Limited-time collaborations — recent ones have involved popular animation characters — add themed decorations and merchandise. It is not a vast oceanarium on the scale of the world's biggest, and adults on their own may find an hour enough, but for children it is a well-paced and entertaining visit, and its location inside one of Seoul's largest underground malls makes it easy to combine with lunch, shopping and the famous Starfield Library a few minutes away.

SEA LIFE COEX is open daily from 10am to 8pm, with last entry at 7pm. Tickets are cheaper and faster when booked online in advance, and the official site regularly runs discounted packages, including couple tickets and character-themed bundles. Weekends and Korean school holidays are the busiest times; weekday mornings are calmest. Ask at the entrance for the day's feeding and talk times and plan your route around the ones your children most want to see, since they are the moments that make the visit.

The aquarium is inside Starfield COEX Mall in Samseong-dong, the huge underground shopping complex attached to the COEX convention center. Samseong Station on Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9 connect to the mall, and inside you will find a large food court, restaurants, a cinema and the two-story Starfield Library with its towering bookshelves. Directly across the road is Bongeunsa, a Buddhist temple founded more than a thousand years ago, with a giant standing Buddha and a temple-stay program — a striking counterpoint to the mall.

Who should go? Families with children under about twelve will get the most out of it, and it is a natural pairing with Lotte World for a Gangnam-and-Jamsil family trip. Couples can make it part of a COEX date, with a couple ticket, the library and dinner. If you are choosing between Seoul's aquariums, Lotte World Aquarium in Jamsil is the main alternative, convenient if you are already at Lotte World Tower.
