Blasieholmen (Norrmalm)

Grand Hôtel Stockholm

Stockholm's grande dame since 1874, on the waterfront facing the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan — a full-scale luxury hotel with the Veranda, Cadier Bar, Matbaren and a big spa. The splurge for a first visit.

★★★★★

The Grand Hôtel has stood on the Blasieholmen waterfront since 1874, and it still has the best address in Stockholm: directly across the water from the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan, with the Strömkajen ferry quay outside the door and the Nationalmuseum next door. It is a full-scale luxury hotel, with 279 rooms, 70 suites and a handful of signature suites, and it has long been part of the Nobel festivities in December. Its food and drink spaces are a destination in themselves: the Veranda, famous for its Swedish smörgåsbord, the Cadier Bar, Matbaren, Seafood Gastro, the Champagne Bar and more, backed by a large wine cellar. The Grand Hôtel Spa and Fitness adds pools, saunas and treatments, a welcome refuge in the dark months. Rooms facing the water and the palace are the ones to book; the views at night, with the palace lit across the harbour, are the image of Stockholm.

Location: you can walk to Gamla Stan in ten minutes across the bridge, to Djurgården along Strandvägen, and to Central Station in about fifteen. Archipelago boats leave from the quay outside.

Living in it: book a water-view room, reserve the Veranda for the smörgåsbord and leave time for the spa. Rates are at the top of the Stockholm market and peak in summer and early December.
