The Tallinn TV Tower, at 314 metres the tallest structure in Estonia, rises from the pine forests of Pirita on the edge of the city. It was built for the sailing regatta of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, held in Tallinn, and it played a role in 1991 when Estonia regained its independence. Today the observation level on the 21st and 22nd floors has floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass floor over a long drop, interactive exhibitions on Estonian history, media and achievements, a children’s play area, and a café and restaurant. The outdoor Walk on the Edge, harnessed to the rim of the tower, is sold separately. On a clear day you can see the city, the forests and the Gulf of Finland. The Tiqets skip-the-line ticket covers entry, the exhibitions and the 22nd-floor deck during daytime hours.
Getting there: the tower is at Kloostrimetsa tee 58a, about 20 to 25 minutes from the centre by bus or taxi, close to the Botanic Garden and the Pirita district. Combine it with Pirita beach, the ruins of St Bridget’s Convent, or Kadriorg Park on the way back into town.
Visiting: allow about an hour and a half. The lift rises quickly; spend time with the views first, then the exhibitions. The ticket gives access to the 22nd floor during the day, but evening access to the top deck is limited, so check the hours of your ticket. Opening hours are longer from Thursday to Saturday. The tower is wheelchair accessible except for the 22nd-floor outdoor deck.
When to go: pick a clear day, as cloud and haze cut the views. Sunset is beautiful on the longer opening evenings. Book a timed skip-the-line slot and arrive on time, since late arrivals lose their priority entry. The Tallinn Card includes entry if you plan to see several museums.
